I am a retired Dental Hygienist of 45 years. Licensed and registered in Maryland but not in Florida. If I would accept a job interview I only want part time or occasional work. Trying to figure out if I want to continue working in my retirement or just enjoy my independence

Job searches

I have lived in NC for a month and a half now, I have had no success with getting a job. Although I do have a small monthly income from my early retirement from my job. Less than 1000 dollars though, I have also taken custody of my 2 grand daughters. So you know my income is not sufficient. I have been to some interviews but has gotten no response back from anyone. I seriously think there is a lot of age discrimination going on here. But I just say oh well its their loss. Because I have training in alot of areas. I will never beg for a job. I have worked since 15, and am 57 now. I will make a way.

Hi Torrence Allen I am sure that has been very difficult for you and your girls. I have found that when no one has gotten back to me that the best thing to do is to review my resume to make sure it has everything that I need to succeed. If a company uses what’s called an [applicant tracking system] (https://www.thebalance.com/what-is-an-applicant-tracking-systems-ats-2061926) your resume could be slipping through the cracks.

The ATS is a program that companies use to sort through 1,000’s of resumes to find the best possible ones. If it doesn’t recognize what it needs, your resume will be cast aside and likely NEVER be seen by an actual person at that company.

To avoid being passed over, utilize keywords! These are the words that relate to the skills, abilities, credentials, and qualities that a hiring manager looks for in a candidate. When recruiters search for keywords in the ATS, they are looking to match certain concrete skills in your resume to their current needs. Come check out to see how yours match up and a list of keywords [here] (https://www.jobscan.co/blog/top-resume-keywords-boost-resume/ )!

Say for example you are applying for a job as the manager of a hotel restaurant. A recruiter may search for phrases such as “restaurant manager,” “hotel restaurant,” or even for the word “hospitality.” Recruiters will not likely look for words and phrases such as “outgoing," "hard worker,” "team player," etc.

It’s very important to remember that keywords highlight your skills and NOT your traits. Be sure to take some time to make an updated list of your keywords and add them to the work experience section of your resume!

For more tips, please make sure to watch [this short clip] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l61IGZLXRkY) as Lenin Pina teaches you how to beat the ATS and turn your resume into an interview!

Remember to keep searching for jobs [here] (https://www.jobcase.com/jobs/search) and stay positive, you can do this!

Please let me know how else I can help!

Torrence Allen I admire your positive spirit. It's really hard to put time and energy and hope into interviews and never hear back. Keep your head up. It sounds like you are strong and resilient, a role model to your granddaughters.

Does my employer care about me?

I have had many jobs & responsibilities in my diverse career, but the last 22 years were for a small single owner company that was like a second family. My only regret was that I stayed until almost 70 years of age instead of using my retirement years to pay attention to my 3 adult children & my 3 grandchildren. Shame on me!!!

Yup it can be a tough road. I'm finally retired but am still interested in working. They all want to see my resume. I don't want to show it! The most common response is 'We can't afford to hire you". That is code for - your too old! Worked full time jobs for nearly 40 years with a nearly perfect record. No one wants a EE that used to make 100 k even to do a part time delivery job.

Working at Home Depot

After I retired from working as an Executive Assistant, I planned to upgrade my home. So got a job at home depot paint department and learned so much about painting, tile, blinds, carpet, plumbing and electrical. SO glad I took the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and HD was the perfect place to do it. Really enjoyed my time working for them and how well they treat their employees.
