*This is an article I copied and pasted with permission from the person who wrote it. I thought it would be helpful to our community.

โ€œDuring a prank, a student stuck a paper on his classmate's back that said "๐—œ'๐—บ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฑ", and asked the rest of the class not to tell the boy. Thus the students began laughing on and off... โ€‹ Came afternoon math class started and their teacher wrote a difficult question on the board. โ€‹ No one was able to answer it except the boy with the sticker. โ€‹ Amid the unexplained giggles, he walked toward the board and solved the problem. โ€‹ The teacher asked the class to clap for him and remove the paper on his back. โ€‹ She told him: "It seems that you donโ€™t know about the paper your classmate has pasted on your back." โ€‹ Then the teacher looked at the rest of the class and said: โ€‹ "Before I give you a punishment, let me tell you 2 things: โ€‹ First, throughout your Life, people will put labels on you with many nasty words to stop your progress. โ€‹ Had your classmate known about the paper, he wouldn't have gotten up to answer the question. โ€‹ "Second, itโ€™s clear that he doesn't have any loyal friend among you all to tell him about the sticker. โ€‹ It doesn't matter how many friends you have - it is the loyalty you share with your friends that matters. #motivation #knowledge

*This is an article I thought was interesting and want to share it with you. This article was cut and pasted with permission. It is the original post and no edits by me.

Reaching out to show someone that youโ€™re thinking of them can make you both feel a bit closer. But sometimes we can feel uncertain about taking that first step. Here's how to do it.

First, think of the right way to reach out โ€” is it a text, a phone call, an email, a Facebook message? What will put the least amount of pressure on the recipient? If you donโ€™t get a response, donโ€™t take it personally. Think about this interaction as similar to smiling at a colleague in the hallway: Sometimes you might stop and chat, and sometimes you might not. Instead of expecting a reply, enjoy the knowledge that your message is likely to deliver a little hit of happiness for the recipient.

Set an expectation for a short and simple conversation โ€” it will help avoid the feeling that socializing is another item on your to-do list. And if you do end up talking, share something about yourself โ€” maybe a photo of your pet or child doing something funny โ€” to help build positive rapport.

It may feel awkward at first, but reaching out to an acquaintance will create a spark of joy for both of you while youโ€™re out of each otherโ€™s sight.

  1. Use informal modes of communication

Phone calls can feel intrusive, and emails seem impersonal. Instead, try reaching out to a โ€œweak tieโ€ via text message or Facebook. This will allow the other person to respond whenever they can, so you donโ€™t need to worry about reaching out at the wrong time.

  1. Donโ€™t expect a reply

Rejection rates when reaching out to a weak tie are extremely low โ€” in one of Gillianโ€™s studies fewer than 12% of people who talked to strangers experienced a rejection. However, during the pandemic, many people are feeling overwhelmed and some may not respond.

If you donโ€™t get a response, donโ€™t take it personally. Remind yourself that the point of reaching out to a weak tie is to let this person know that you are thinking about them. Reframe your expectations: Think about this interaction as smiling at a colleague in the hallway. Youโ€™re acknowledging and saying hello to the other person. Perhaps youโ€™ll talk for a few minutes โ€” but if you donโ€™t thatโ€™s fine too.

Instead of expecting a reply, enjoy the knowledge that your message is likely to deliver a little hit of happiness, and maybe, like it did for Ashley, could make a real difference in someoneโ€™s day.

  1. Set an expectation for a short and simple conversation.

Your goal is to let the other person know you are thinking about them and open up the opportunity to chat, if they want to. Itโ€™s okay to keep the conversation short: In recent data one of us collected, a โ€œjust rightโ€ conversation with a stranger was about 10 minutes long. If you set the expectation that you only have a few minutes, this lets you both off the hook, and helps you avoid the feeling that socializing is another endless โ€œto-do.โ€

  1. Reach out to people who have affected you in the past.

Expressing gratitude is a powerful way to improve mood. If you had a colleague who inspired you, or a mentor who gave you excellent career advice, let them know you are thinking of them. Or you could reach out to someone you shared fun times but have lost touch with. Youโ€™ll both enjoy the nostalgic flashback.

  1. Share something personal about yourself.

If you arenโ€™t sure what to write about, share something personal about yourself โ€” like a photo of your pet or child doing something cute and/or funny. Sharing aspects of yourself helps to build positive rapport and encourages the other person to reciprocate.

Draw on Weak-Tie Strategies with Strong Ties Too

Now that our social interactions are often limited to strong ties, and we schedule hour-long calls and board game nights to spend quality time together, we are at risk for becoming burned out. In data that weโ€™ve collected post-Covid-19, we found that the more time that people spent interacting with colleagues and friends online, the more stressed out they felt.

As these data suggest, scheduled social interactions are exhausting. Also, they do not work for everyone. People in different time zones, with bad internet connection, who are juggling demanding care-giving and work responsibilities might not have time for formal means of connection that require advanced scheduling, like family or company-mandated happy hours.

We can repurpose the informality and spontaneity of weak-tie interactions to help us stay connected while reducing the risk of burnout. Right now, the best social interactions are those that tell others you are thinking of them, without an expectation of a return of time, energy, or attention.

If studying weak ties has taught us anything, it is that we need to practice self-compassion. We might not have the energy for 1.5 hour long social calls every day. That is perfectly alright.

The best research shows that even a few minutes of texting is enough to improve your mood and spread joy within your social network โ€” perhaps more than that never-ending game of Pictionary.

We might be missing out on our weak tie interactions right now, but it is in our power to create them. An informal hello with a colleague โ€” or your mother โ€” is only a short text message away. #motivation #knowledge #wisdom

#MyThoughts on Sunday

Itโ€™s Sunday a the perfect time to begin thinking outside the box.

Why not start with NEW BEGINNINGS? Start with a New Plan of Obtaining a Job, focus on what it is you see yourself doing in 2023!

New Mindset: Means setting you mindset in what it is you see yourself doing in 2023. Medical Field, Retail Sales, Customer Service, Remote Work, Waiter/Waitress, Accounts Payable, Account Management, Laborers, Plumbers, Electricians, are just a few examples of planning on the goal of employment. The Mindset starts with new ideas, new thoughts, and New Goals of obtaining employment.

New Start: The New Start means starting from the beginning and ending on top. Not waiting another Day, Week, Month, or Year. Start Today!

New Intentions: What are your intentions? Regardless of what you think of doing, it starts with the intention of completing the task.

New Results: When you change the process that didnโ€™t previously result in a positive outcome, itโ€™s time to change up the game. In the past I would set my mindset on gaining new business. After spending wasted money on my marketing ideas it ended with no positive results. After looking at my past ideas, made adjustments to what I did in the past and changed it. The results was positive, gaining 10% new business in 2022. Although it wasnโ€™t enough for me I changed it up again. The results were more sales. I didnโ€™t beat myself up over the mistakes I made. I used it as a learning experience to make it better. Why allow it to stand in your way of doing it today? Start Today with New Beginnings, New Mindset, New Focus, New Start, New Intentions, equals New Results. May Your Sunday be filled with Good Thoughts, Positive Beginnings, and Clear Mindset. #advice #applying #wisdom #knowledge

Community Observations

I have been (back) on Jobcase after being away for several years and throughout my time supporting the community, I have seen the same constant posts from people. It's understandable that people need advice, support, feedback, or suggestions, so I want to try to make this easier for anyone and everyone. If you come across this post, take note.

Pick what information you want to know, should know, or want to keep in mind going forward.

WHAT IS JOBCASE?: Jobcase is a social media platform that provides employment resources to job seekers. It is similar to LinkedIn but a less corporate based version. These resources may be a factor in securing successful employment, but landing a job all depends on you. Those within the community should understand that nothing is given to you, to anyone. If you want something, you have to make an effort and work for it. P.s. Jobcase is not a dating site. One can be friendly and compliment someone, but be respectful in your approach.

There are millions of jobs available and millions of people who need jobs, so what are you doing to make yourself stand out from the others? How you market yourself is just as important as it is to need an income to survive. You cannot expect handouts in life just because you "need a job".

You should always apply yourself in ways that matter. Don't have the experience or skills sets? Work on gaining them by volunteering or taking free training courses. Learn to build your own platform as you deal with the pressures of the real world. It won't be easy but it will be worth it.

EMPLOYMENT SCAMS: The unfortunate reality is that employment scams are rampant everywhere. You have to work extra hard to dig, research into an opportunity to verify its legitimacy, and prevent yourself from being scammed. The objective of any scammer is simple, they want information and money, and how they get it can be spread across every platform possible (mail, email, phone, online, etc.). Scammers know to target vulnerable people who are desperate, gullible, and hopeful.

A scammer contacts you via text message, email, or through social media presenting an opportunity. If they claim or tell you:

  1. You can make a high dollar amount that is too good to be true.
  2. Claim you can work remotely by sending or positing information online.
  3. Tell you that they need a check for a specific amount to cover the cost of equipment or supplies needed to perform the job.
  4. Ask you to cash a check they plan to send you (cash fraud checks through your bank)
  5. They are unable to provide you with a company website and a direct link to the position.
  6. Immediately offer you a job without an interview.

IT IS A SCAM!

Scammers are known to hijack job listings and repost the same position across third-party job boards to scam unsuspecting individuals who do not know how to differentiate between a real job listing and a scam.

JOB APPLICATIONS: If you come across a position of interest and want to apply for the role, here are some best practices to be proactive in your job searches:

  1. Read the job description in full. Copy the entire job description and email it to yourself for recordkeeping. Note: This also comes in handy for any employment or legal proof reasons.

  2. Locate the companyโ€™s physical website, go to their careers section and search for the same position you found on a job board. Match/compare the job description you found/emailed to yourself and confirm the details line by line.

Note: Some companies may not have the position posted on their website for three reasons:

  1. The position has not been posted yet or the companyโ€™s website isnโ€™t built to track or manage the influx of job applications received.

  2. It is possible the position is not accurate, or real and/or the position was hijacked by a scammer and reposted to lure applicants for their personal information, as they pose as the company. If you suspect this, CALL the companyโ€™s HR department, which you can pull directly from the โ€œcontactโ€ section of any companyโ€™s website.

Let them know you want to verify a job listing you found online before submitting your application.** Companies will happily help you with this anytime, and in some cases, it can even be a benefit to you by showing you are taking initiative to be proactive, and helps you build rapport with someone on the inside that may like you enough to be a reference.**

  1. The position was filled and the company removed the job listing from their website but not from the job board itself. This commonly happens.

Applying for a position from a companyโ€™s website typically requires you to create a username and password to gain access into the companyโ€™s job portal, and track your application status. Yes, itโ€™s tedious, yes, itโ€™s time consuming, yes, itโ€™s redundant, but welcome to technology. The benefit to this is that you also learn to become more technically savvy the more you do this. Silver lining?

Make sure your resume is up to date before applying for any job. Check for spelling or grammatical errors, and make any updates, if needed.

REJECTION TYPES: Many job applications will be automatically rejected if the following applies:

  1. Your application has missing information by choice. Putting โ€œsee resumeโ€ in lieu of not filling out an application in full is an automatic rejection. Some ATS won't even allow you to proceed with an application until all required fields are completed.

  2. Your resume doesn't match specific keys words that the ATS is scanning for, and although no one has control over the functionality of ATS, be sure your resume has matching key words you identified within the job description of the position you applied to.

INTERVIEWS - PHONE, VIRTUAL OR IN-PERSON: Companies will typically make first contact with an applicant via email or by phone, and either be a tier level recruiter, a talent acquisition specialist, an HR generalist, or a hiring manager post-application submission if your background sparks the companyโ€™s interest to want to schedule an interview with you. Post-applying to jobs does not automatically warrant an interview.

You will know who they are when they introduce themselves โ€“ remember them because this is where your interview begins without you knowing. This is also where you'll want to go back into your emails and pull up the job description you emailed to yourself.

Be prepared, do your research behind the company, the position, and its responsibilities. Do not procrastinate to the last minute, and be sure to ask questions. No company will waste their time if you have no questions, and assume you donโ€™t want to know anything. Companies know this is BS and will immediately reject you or move on to the next person. Remember, you are competing with other applicants, too.

Most companies will conduct virtual interviews using MS Teams, Zoom, or WebEx, unless it's in-person. You want to confirm with your recruiter about which video conferencing application the company uses to conduct their interviews beforehand, or if the interview will be held in-person.

BACKGROUND CHECKS: Got an offer pending a background check? Hereโ€™s what you should know:

  1. Background checks are between 5-7 (OR) 7-10 years depending on what the companyโ€™s background check timeframe is. This is typically indicated at the end of a job application in fine print and will highlight what a company is searching for during the background check. Keep note of this.

  2. Companies looks for criminal records for felonies/misdemeanors, sexual harassment/offenders/pornography, and drug use. Marijuana may also a considered a drug depending on the company and your state of residence, and defined as medicinal or recreational use. In addition to the background checks, companies will also conduct a credit check if your position or the company handles or manages any finances.

For credit checks, companies will look for records of financial fraud/embezzlement. A low credit score may or may not be overlooked but companies want to see how of if you manage or can manage finances, and if you are trustworthy with handling finances. Depending on your state of residence, it is always best to request a free copy of your background and credit report, which is or should be free to you when being conducted for the purpose of employment.

  1. Any job offer is contingent on your background check and can/will be rescinded if you fail your background check.

If your offense is old and/or has surpassed a time frame, it is completely legal to not specify that on your job applications. When a person has been convicted of a felony, the length of time the felony will show up on the record depends on the state the felon lives in.

In California, Colorado, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Texas, and Washington, a felony will not show up on a record after seven years no matter what. In every other state, however, the information is present on the record forever. It all depends on how far back the requester (company) of the background check wants to go, but they are able to obtain information regarding any felony convictions during your entire lifetime. Most employers only go back 5-10 years on a background check, though.

You can read more information regarding convictions here: https://www.privateeyesbackgroundchecks.com/does-a-felony-show-up-after-7-years/. Hopefully this insight may help you future job search.

ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT at the end of each job application before itโ€™s submitted. Some companies require your agreement via a box checked, a signature (typed name), or an automatic agreement when you submit your application. It varies from company to company.

Hopefully you take whatever information applies to you, to your situation and it's helpful or insightful during your job search.
