Right now, I'm in a "transition" job, wherein I'm there just to get by until I find something better. As I've had great difficulty finding a good-paying, career-worthy job at a time when I'm changing careers, I've had to settle for less, yet I'm still looking. This transition job underpays me as I hold a master's; they admitted this on day one, and I knew it too. I accepted that and plan to stay until I find better.

How soon after starting a new job is it ok to use it as a reference safely for another if I get hired elsewhere?

Also, what do I tell an interviewer or write in a cover letter for a better-paying, more rewarding career about my current job I haven't been at for long?
