To say the remote job market is competitive would be an understatement! Every source I've heard from, ranging from news outlets, government statistics, and fellow job searchers agree that the once-hot remote job market has frozen. The gold rush is over, folks. I myself have been looking for remote, in-person, and hybrid positions for some time now, and I can vouch for this first-hand.

The only hope seems to be meeting every requirement in the job description, including every "desirable" or "nice to have" quality listed. These have become prerequisites, barriers to entry, do-or-die requirements.

Here are a few other keys to locking down that job (in my humble opinion, based on what I’ve variously heard):

1. Apply to at least 5 companies a day. Lots of agreement on this one, and quite frankly, more is a lot better in this market. However, don't forget to take time to stay mentally and physically healthy!

2. Use terminology from the job description in your resume to optimize for AI review, and/or review by recruiters who may be seeing hundreds of applications.

3. Always submit a lean, but substantive cover letter, if you can. Not too long, not too short, with specifics. Avoid platitudes and vague office-speak.

4. Apply using 3rd party profiles (LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.) AND directly “from resume/email,” unless directed not to. This will ensure that your resume gets seen by more systems which may have different filters, be they human or machine.

5. Highlight, and sometimes mention the specifics of your home office setup. Internet up/download speed, computer specs, software, etc. (Just try to make it sound casual.)

6. Diversify your job search engines to an extent, but be mindful that many of the big job boards are scraping leads from the same sources!

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer for our manufacturing, aerospace industry company, located in New England. This position can be fully remote, anywhere within the United States.

Responsible for developing and maintaining world-class CAD/CAM manufacturing software for machining of turbomachinery components. Creating software development plans, program specifications, code development requirements documents, participating in design reviews, and design code. Creating code for new features, fixes, compilation and test. Creating and maintaining code documentation and developing models and algorithms for toolpath creation.

Must have programming experience with C++, Windows, CAD kernels; experience with Applied Computational Geometry (e.g., B-spline curves and surface (NURBS). Knowledge of the application of CAM software and general machining principles. Outstanding communication, leadership and organizational skills required.

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, and/or Engineering. Masters or Ph.D. is a strong plus. Minimum of five years related work experience is required.
