I am an Employment Consultant in Seattle with a mission to create life opportunities for persons with disabilities. I help this talent pool become gainfully employed and thrive in the community. According to the Bueau of Labor & Statistics the unemployment rate for Americans with disabilities is around 70%. With #RemoteWork becoming mainstream many of the individuals I support seek to #upskill and join the digital economy. Not everyone has a college degree or an IT background. They are resilient with a learn-it-all attitude and are often early adopter of assistive technologies that create a pathway to independence. During #Covid19 a job opportunity that is meaningful is a game changer and can overcome social exclusion and build a reservoir of hope for this talent pool. That being said it is one job at a time! I will be keeping track of this. I have High-Functioning Autism (Asperger’s), though no one would think I do at all... but I’m convinced it shoots my chances at interviews by putting off bad vibes. Also it gives me a defeatist attitude about competing for anything against others, let alone jobs. I only have a liberal arts BA degree I did very well in and a lot of other credentials, but I feel like I have to totally shift to a new field in which merit will get you the job over interviewing skills. I actually do have great people skills but not under a strict hierarchical system or where you’re expected to act ‘inauthentic,’ such as in an interview.
