Hi @Susie Roberts - Before heading into your interview at Costco, here are some recommendations! Is your interview coming up? :)

  1. Read the full job description. Before heading into the interview, I would make sure you read the job description carefully to ensure you meet all the criteria of the job.

  2. Prepare for your interview. Arrive at the interview 5 - 10 minutes early, and do some prep work so that you feel prepared and confident! Brush up on some of the top interview questions, learn how to navigate tough interview questions, and be sure to do your research about the company before walking in. You'll also want to know how and when to follow up after an interview.!

  3. Decide what you are wearing. Here are tips on how to dress for a virtual interview, though the main ideas are the same whether the meeting is in person or virtual. Keep jewelry to a minimum, dress in business-casual attire, and make sure you lay everything out the night before so that your outfit is free of wrinkles!

If you are open to other opportunities, be sure to head to our job search tool. Best of luck, Susie!

out of loop How does one with 10+ years experience start over?

So is anyone else finding themselves out of work after many years and way behind the times. I feel as if I need to go back to school and relearn software engineering as technology completely passed me by during my tenure on my previous job. Worst part is, no one will hire me as a junior software developer, citing that I have too much experience. How does one with 10+ years experience start over? #careeradvice

I Don’t Even Know What I Want to Do

If this is you, understand that this is a normal and actually a healthy place to be.

Who’s to say we’re supposed to always have next steps 100% figured out?

If you’re not sure what you want to do, I’m guessing there’s a good chance that you DON’T want to do what you’re doing now or what you just left?

Great!

Instead of trying to think or guess what you can do next, utilize the information that is already out there to help you.

Sites like this one, Indeed, among others have tons of job descriptions. Simply type in some keywords that illustrate the kind of work you would like to do (i.e. Customer Service, Training, Account Management) and see what comes up.

You are simply using the job descriptions that populate to help you get a sense of what types of roles are out there.

Read them casually and when you see something within those roles that interests you, insert THOSE keywords and keep searching.

As you do this, the picture will become clearer: you will find roles that interest you and roles that do not. Both are valuable.

Finally, once you have some ideas for your next step, find folks who are already working in those roles and see if they’d be willing to talk to you so you can learn even more and get the full story.

Hey Joseph, most legitimate job require applicants to apply and qualify with a history of previous work experience in skills in order to be considered for hire. Have you applied anywhere yet? What type of job(s) are you looking for?

Job Seekers: You’re Not Bothering Anyone

There is a huge gap between endlessly bugging someone who is unresponsive or politely reaching out to potentially set up a call or an informal meeting.

Networking is one of the best ways to get your foot in the door at a company and you should feel ZERO GUILT about connecting with someone or sending them a message right here on jobcase.

People waste plenty of time during the day so don’t feel like your 2-3 sentence email is a big disruption. It’s not.

Worst case? They ignore or delete your message. No big deal.

Connect with or email 10 different people a day and folks will start to respond. You never know where one conversation can lead, so don’t be shy or hesitant.

There are many people out there who are willing to help you…they just need to be asked.

why is a guy who at your age and seems like someone who could have been running his own business but yet you like to start at the bottom can you tell me a little about that

#interview well the way I see it is you can hit bottom Many times and get up to the next level. The next level. Moving up in a Corporation and dealing with whoever's in charge . Alot of times gets in the way and you can get jealous and it's hard to live in that type of environment a lot. Now I'm very laid back and don't argue not saying that. But jealous people who think they deserved the job instead is just natural and Iwill somehow get through it. I do whats best for the company.

You'll Never Please Everyone...and That's Okay.

There is so much advice out there about what job seekers need to do to please every person they come across.

Forget it.

Understand that not every position or hiring manager or company is going to be the right fit for you…and that’s just fine.

Do what is in your control and just be your best professional self when interviewing. Be prepared, be engaging, and show interest in the company and the role.

If someone at a company doesn’t “like” what they see, then great! You would rather know that before starting at a new company than after a few months.

As a job seeker, you’re looking for one good fit, not 100. The right company will value you just as you are.
