Mindset Is Everything

When you've been searching for a job day in and day out and none of your efforts are successful, it's easy to become frustrated, depressed and angry. That sense of desperation begins to encroach on every thought and the domino effect can be devastating to to daily life and wellbeing. A negative mindset is like a heavy burden that weighs you down and wears you out.

You aren't alone I assure you. Most of us have been in that situation and some of us have struggled for way too long. It can lead to seriously harmful negative thought processes that culminate in the "nothingness" mindset. "Nothings going right for me, nothing is getting better, nothings ever going to change, nothing I do works out"... eventually you get depressed and start to feel like you have no hope. Yep, depression is the destroyer of hope. And, I'm sure we've all heard someone say "There's always hope" and immediately felt annoyed by their blissful ignorance because we sure as heck aren't feeling it.

I don't know if I would call it hope but I was in a very dark place myself and completely immersed in my "nothingness". Every day yielded zero results for my efforts and I was so over it. Then something came my way that helped change my thought process and my mindset and I'd like to share it.

During that time I happened to come across a story about someone who shared a plan she had made to help her just get through each day with enough determination to wake up the next day and do it again. She pointed out some of the simplest things she changed that helped make a difference in how she felt and those things carried her through until she finally found a job. She shared that it was the hardest thing she ever had to do but in short time, it worked out for her. She said that her defeatest mindset was her worst enemy and although it took a while, she began to feel a different sense of determination and her mindset began to change. After following her new routine for a couple of weeks, a job offer came along and set her on a path to feeling better about herself and the world around her. She shared that her mindset had almost destroyed her and she would have just missed that opportunity.

I couldn't find that story (it's been years) but I did find something that might be helpful. I know that her story helped me and I've shared it with others that needed to hear it. So today I'm encouraging you to turn off the TV, get up off the couch, go somewhere pleasant and peaceful and go to this website and see what it has to offer. It can't hurt to check it out.

Virtual Job Fairs/ Hiring Events, Portland, OR

For individuals living in and near the Portland Oregon area the Job Fair season is coming up!

Many of these opportunities are as available to job seekers with criminal backgrounds as they are to anyone else. If you live anywhere between Salem and South Washington I highly encourage you to check out the link I've provided and register for locations and industries that are of interest to you. Locations are Portland, Gresham, Hillsborough and Vancouver, WA. Some are happening today!!

As always, I suggest researching the companies who are showcased in any job fair or hiring event so you know about the industry and company your applying to.

GOOD LUCK!!

Solid Reentry Plan is Crucial for Success

We post a lot of how important it is to not allow your criminal history to define who you are in the present. It's hard though, when all you want to do is get on track, put the burden of your mistakes behind you and move forward towards a better life.

Some days, just working through the negative mindset and navigating the challenges of social stigma, poor self image and not knowing where to begin can influence your efforts. It takes courage, determination and a desire to rise above these challenges to find the rewards of your hard work. "No" is a common word and can lead to negative thinking and self sabotage. Reality is, you'll have to work harder than most to achieve your goals.

This article lays it out and provides resources and ideas for how to plan a successful reentry process. It can take a long time to feel like you're making progress but we encourage you to stick with it. Use all the resources at your disposal and be ok with the fact that it won't be easy but it is doable. And know that we are here to help!

Check out this article and let us know if you have any experiences or helpful insights the rest of us could benefit from.

Background Check

I have a felon on my background for a nonviolent, nondrug conviction. The sentence was issued to me 20 years ago. I served 5 and a half years in prison. Even though the conviction happened 20 years ago, it still makes for a problem when I apply for good-paying jobs. I am a senior citizen. I wish they understood that all that I seek is to work at a job and earn a decent living. I haven't had any other arrests or judgments since that conviction happened 20 years ago. I am getting close to 70 and hope that I will be able to find a livable income-paying job before I reach 100 years of age. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.
