Best Current Resources For Jobs For Those With Felony Records

Timeka Green has a YouTube channel called "Heyyy HR!" where she focuses on helping those jobseekers with felony records find employment and resource information. She provides viable links to those resources and does a great job of vetting her information. This is her latest video from April 2023 which includes great resource information.

Watch her video and be sure to scroll down for more information about the jobs and resources she presents. Some of these have already been presented through Jobcase and are posted here in the Fair Chance to Succeed group or can be found in the Resource Center under "Second Chances Resource Center".

I've provided links below. If you find really great information there, please come back and share what you discovered with our other members. We're in this together!"

Current Ban The Box Information

We've posted in this group many times regarding that awful intimidating Box on an application that asks "Have you ever been convicted of a felony?". For some, just the thought of checking that box is enough to cause anxiety.

I'm providing a link to a 2023 edition of an interactive state map that job seekers with criminal background issues can use to check if their state or city has adopted this law and signed the Fair Chance Pledge. This law prohibits a prospective employer from asking this question during the initial application process. Once a job offer is extended however, they can and often do ask.

Be prepared to answer honestly and provide a confident well worded explanation. There are other posts here in the Fair Chance group that can offer guidance and "how to" examples.

Use this map to see if you live in a felon friendly state or city. Be sure to scroll down past the map to see specific information. For example, Florida is NOT a Ban the Box state but Gainesville has specific information about their participation.

Solid Reentry Plan is Crucial for Success

We post a lot of how important it is to not allow your criminal history to define who you are in the present. It's hard though, when all you want to do is get on track, put the burden of your mistakes behind you and move forward towards a better life.

Some days, just working through the negative mindset and navigating the challenges of social stigma, poor self image and not knowing where to begin can influence your efforts. It takes courage, determination and a desire to rise above these challenges to find the rewards of your hard work. "No" is a common word and can lead to negative thinking and self sabotage. Reality is, you'll have to work harder than most to achieve your goals.

This article lays it out and provides resources and ideas for how to plan a successful reentry process. It can take a long time to feel like you're making progress but we encourage you to stick with it. Use all the resources at your disposal and be ok with the fact that it won't be easy but it is doable. And know that we are here to help!

Check out this article and let us know if you have any experiences or helpful insights the rest of us could benefit from.

Companies That Belong To The SCBC 2022

In April 2021 individuals with felony records were finally acknowledged as being a viable and critical population in the workforce. Recognizing that the stigma of a criminal background was preventing reentry felons from getting jobs and contributing to a major negative impact among their communities, major US companies collaborated with national organizations to create the Second Chance Business Coalition.

Co-chaired by JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chairman & CEO Jamie Dimon and Chairman & CEO of Eaton Craig Arnold, the SCBC promotes the benefits of second chance employment and provides major employers with a set of tools, relationships and expertise to allow them to successfully hire and provide career advancement and greater economic opportunities to people with criminal records.

Companies that have already joined the SCBC include Accenture, AT&T, Bank of America, Best Buy, Cisco, CVS Health, DICK’S Sporting Goods, Eaton, Gap Inc., General Motors, The Home Depot, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Koch Industries, Kroger, Mastercard, McDonald’s, Microsoft, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, Prudential Financial, Inc., Schnitzer Steel Industries, Target, Texas Instruments Incorporated, Union Pacific, Verizon Communications, Visa, Vistra Corp., Walgreens Boots Alliance and Walmart. These companies all became members between 2016 & 2021 and the list continues to grow as significant benefits to the companies, employees and communities are being proven. You can read more about the SCBC here:

SCBC.

When job searching, you can ask if the company you're applying to has signed the Fair Chance Business Pledge. Many of these companies have partnerships with community and national organizations that can assist employees with resources to ensure they are getting their needs met so they are healthy, productive and dedicated employees.
