I once worked at a health food grocery, and I would always bag groceries for our customers. I like to think I was quick, polite and methodical, and took pride in my process.
However, I noticed cashiers doing this less and less. Grocers at my neighborhood Lassens, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's seem to have stopped entirely. It's kind of awkward to process my payment only to then scramble to bag my own groceries while the attendant sort of stands there.
Maybe it has something to do with not wanting to handle someone else's reusable bag? Post-COVID lifestyle? Maybe it has to do with societal changes? Maybe I'm just off base on this one—haha!
I hate self checkouts, bring back the cashiers.

This week one of their customers took extreme offense to be asked to wear a mask and after a brief argument shot the cashier in the head.

I think its everything anymore. Stress, anxiety, dealing with miserable people who enjoy being that. Communication is non existent with people. We can hide behind so much. Plus everyone is so high on opiates and cant function with out anything. Unfortunately, its not 1960 anymore where people enjoyed seeing people and not fighting traffic and Hassel and bussel. Plus, we don't own technology it owns us. We can't stay away from screens. Our menus, self check out, in our cars, phones, even at the gas pump, we constantly have a screens in our face!
