I once worked at a health food grocery, and I would always bag groceries for our customers. I like to think I was quick, polite and methodical, and took pride in my process.
However, I noticed cashiers doing this less and less. Grocers at my neighborhood Lassens, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's seem to have stopped entirely. It's kind of awkward to process my payment only to then scramble to bag my own groceries while the attendant sort of stands there.
Maybe it has something to do with not wanting to handle someone else's reusable bag? Post-COVID lifestyle? Maybe it has to do with societal changes? Maybe I'm just off base on this one—haha!

lm handicapped never can find a cart much less carry out at Walmart. I shop Brookshires great meats, produce, friendly excellent customer service.

I used to work for major grocery chain many many years ago. We had to pass a cashier test to be a cashier. Everyone that was cashier & sacker had to a watch video & learn how to properly bag groceries, such as cold & frozen stuff together, non-perishables & dry goods that isn't chemicals would be put together, I think cleaners and chemicals would be put with non food items. Nowadays they will throw everything mixed all in together. It drives me nuts that's why I bag my own groceries.

Hmmm that’s interesting 🤔 it seems like for the most part workers are continuing to bag where I live. I would only assume it has to be related to post-Covid lifestyle? Also - is it just me or does anyone else get extremely anxious after the cashier hands you your change and you quickly try to put it neatly in your wallet before grabbing your bags? So having to then bag items myself on top of that… I’m not sure I would make it!

Grocery baggers are uniquely American, they might be taking cues from everyone else, also most grocery stores are understaffed in my area, I really kind of wonder if stores used the pandemic to cut staff expenses or if there really is that big of a need for staff. I have been doing it for years anyway, I use my backpack and panniers to tote groceries on my bike, and you get used to the jumble of bagging and paying. The only problem I have is when the person in front of me can't seem to get it together, then everyone is just kind of staring them down.

Covid has change the game flipped, snipped it and turn it ALL AROUND and the aftermath of the Covid Beast is as raw and unapologetic as Covid when it came into our lives prices or through the roof ppl/ business owners have lost their minds with these ridiculous prices. Only thing that has stayed the same low pay ,no raises but still expect you to kill yourself working doing a 3 person job oh yeah now its a 5 person job. SMH

Yes I am very interested in leaning more about the UnitedHealth Group. Thank you for your response to my application.

I have found that grocery store employees, especially Kroger, do not understand the words Customer Service; the words are not in their vocabulary. They do not understand the concept of providing Customer Service. And it does not cost anything!!! Just a smile, or help the customer, and say thank you for shopping at our store.
And much the same Nationally; Customer Service is a dying Artform in these United States...

With so many viruses floating around nowadays I’m more than happy to do self checkout and bag my own groceries.

I agree with what you're saying. No one takes pride or respect in their job. I usually bag my own groceries anyway that way things won't get damaged. Or the bleach isn't bagged with the eggs. Sebastian maniscalco has a hilarious comedy show on this and people at the grocery store.
Yes, I have noticed a big change in the grocery stores and their employees. I was literally bagging my own groceries while an employee stood there and talked to the cashier. I left thinking, really??? When I worked in a store many years ago, we always bagged customers groceries and went above and beyond. While I understand that COVID has impacted all of our lives and jobs , I don’t think that employees should be able to choose if they are going to do their jobs. I do understand if they are busy and short handed, of course. I often bag my own groceries and always have if needed.
