WHAT MOTIVATES YOU AS A DRIVER Im sure we all have different reasons for what gives us that urge and drive. If your a family man like myself, my wife and kids keep me pushing forward to see them happy. But on the other hand we like nice things too. When you see nice things, it makes you want them or similiar. I came across this truck and was mesmerized. What motivates you??? Chime in!

Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Working inside the ports is laid back with a lot of waiting around for your transactions, but just because I’m not driving around on the streets I still have to be aware of all dangers that are around me.
Whenever I’m in a port transaction, I have to park next to containers that are stacked on top of every other and wait for the crane operator to load my can. I always check to see if all the containers are stacked properly. If they look like they are not stacked properly, I will not park my tractor next to that stack. I would also like to add that living in Southern California we can get an earthquake at any given moment. So I try to stay aware of any ground movement so that if there is, I can exit the other side of my door as quickly as possible. I have seen some images of the ports in Turkey where that devastating earthquake hit and there was literally stacks of containers everywhere and on fire due to hazardous materials inside those containers.
There have been three deaths in one year at the ports so I try to stay as vigilant as possible in regards to safety. I have attached a photo of an incident I encountered at the Long Beach ports a few days ago. Be safe and be pro-active with safety.

Top 10 Busiest Ports in the U.S.
Port of Seattle, Port of New York and New Jersey, Port of Norfolk, Port of Savannah, Port of Charleston, Port of Miami, Port of Houston, Port of Long Beach, Port of Los Angeles.
Although there are roughly 360 ports throughout the United States, these are the 10 busiest ports. I work the Long Beach and Los Angeles ports and from my experience this is one of the highest paid areas for commercial drivers which can earn them up to six figures depending on the company the driver is working for.
In order to work inside the ports you’ll need a TWIC Card which requires TSA clearance. In order to qualify for a TWIC Card you’ll need to pay $130 and be a U.S. Citizen, not be convicted of Murder or Espionage, and not have any felony convictions within seven years.
Commercial drivers that work inside the ports generally have weekends off and work in between 50-60 hours. We have the same holidays as the union workers inside the ports, so when they are off work, we are off work. This is the perfect job for someone with a family and enjoys coming home every night to their loved ones. Port work is no touch freight and is drop and hook. I don’t really drive no more then 100-200 miles a week since all transactions normally go to our yard which is 5 miles away.
Transactions can take in between 1-6 hours and a commercial driver is basically doing a lot of waiting around. If you don’t mind this type of work, this is definitely for you. You’ll be able to have time to read books, generate additional income by working on your other businesses and remote work like I do. If you live near an ocean I recommend working for a carrier that has contracts working inside the ports. Any other questions about the ports or commercial driving feel free to reach out.

Fire Extinguisher Awareness
Large commercial trucks account for about 7,000 fires annually, but less than 3 percent of fires involving all highway vehicles. These totals are less than would be predicted by the proportion of crashes and other measures of exposure.
Since I’ve been a commercial driver one thing I have noticed is that we do not receive fire extinguisher training. I have received training as a warehouse employee, but not as a commercial driver. A few months ago in 2022 I did come across a state bed truck hauling flammable torpedo tanks catch on fire in San Diego. I was hauling a hazmat cargo myself and I could feel the heat inside my tractor. It’s a scary situation to be in because these tanks can explode and can inflict shrapnel to anyone nearby.
Always be sure your fire extinguisher is fully charged during your pre-trip and post trip inspections. Remember the acronym P.A.S.S
Pull (Pin) Pull pin at the top of the extinguisher, breaking the seal.
Aim. Approach the fire standing at a safe distance.
Squeeze. Squeeze the handles together to discharge the extinguishing agent inside.
Sweep.
