Behavioral Questions in Interviews

You might know what these dreaded questions are in interviews, "tell me about a time..." Jobcase has an article I'll post below on how they think you should answer. But as one who's been to more than one rodeo, so to speak, I'm going to flip this on its head.

First, don't fall into a mental trap that the response you give them has to be 100% truthful and verifiable. They will never know, and never find out. I'm not saying to outright lie, but you can tell any story you like. What they are looking for is your reaction, your "behavior", in a challenging situation. It can benefit you to come up with how you would act at your best within a past situation. This will put your best foot forward. These questions seek little stories as answers, prepare to tell some stories. To quote author Farley Mowat, "never let the facts get in the way of the truth."

Confidence is a key employers look for in most candidates. One way you can put that out there is when the hiring manager asks, "do you have any questions for us?" answer back with a behavioral question of your own. Don't be a jerk about it, but don't be afraid to probe. This isn't them hiring you to be the lucky chosen one who will do all they ask when employed by them. This is a partnership, and you will be a stakeholder. You likely have questions about the company, how they react to certain situations, and you have a right to know that answer, and make your own judgment on whether this company will be a good fit for you.

For example, if this company is at all into tech, speaks of themselves as modern, forward thinking, you could ask a question like, "It's well accepted in the next decade up to half of all work-related tasks may be replaced by AI. How do you see not just this opening, but the department, and company responding to this future?

There are all kinds of questions you can come up with that honestly focus on communication, skills development, morale building, rival companies and competition, more. You don't have to be an ass and grill them, but it's fair to seek an honest answer to a legitimate question.

Salary requirements

So in the interview process the question was asked what are my salary requirements? I said that question has no benefit to me and I’m not answering it. You are the one that has the job offer me something and I will accept it or reject it but I’m not gonna negotiate against myself and if that’s a deal breaker I’m sorry thank you for your time. We will see if an offer is coming or not

I am a retired former school teacher, taught high school science courses for over 3O yrs. with a Master’s degree. Then I worked full time doing data entry for 6 yrs. I would like extra income now and live some distance from jobs, an hour away. I also have a beloved disabled 12 yr old German Shepherd, former working dog, who I do not like to leave alone all day. For that reason, I will only take a Work from Home job. Cost of gas to drive for a part time job would not benefit me financially.
