#CareerDiscovery: Truck Driver

Many jobs have been put on hold due to the Coronavirus, so now is the time to consider a new career opportunity. You never know, you may love it even more than your old one!

Truck driving jobs are in HIGH demand right now.

Here are a few things you need to do to get started:

1- Obtain a CDL The first step is to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from your state of residence, which comes with its own set of requirements.

2- Attend a Truck Driving School To earn a CDL, you’ll have to attend a truck driving school. Each school may have slight variations in its truck driver requirements, but there are a few qualifications that are consistent across the board. Many companies will offer to pay for this for you permitting you work for them afterward.

3- Clean Driving Record & Solid Work History Most truck driving schools require a clean driving record and a solid work history to be admitted to their programs. Want more information on truck driver qualifications in your state? Pick up a copy of your state’s commercial driver’s manual at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to become familiar with commercial driving rules and regulations.

4- Be at Least 21 Years Old The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all professional truck drivers to be at least 21 years old.

They are scared of me

Since Coronavirus my business has taken a huge hit. People are afraid for me to come to their house. I am a professional plumber. You would think it wouldn't come to this right, but I am not working delivering groceries to peoples front doors now. I need money and things are tight. This will hold us over for awhile I guess until things go back to normal. Anyone need a good plumber? : (

Time for a change...

Did you know that you can take the skills you have gained and transfer them into a brand new role? This can come in VERY handy if you need to switch careers temporarily such as during the time of the Coronavirus.

Here’s how to get started!

Check the job description If you’re not sure which skills you should include for a particular role check the job description and see what they are looking for! Here are a few examples of skills that you can transfer, check out more [here] (https://www.utoledo.edu/success/career/pdfs/transferable_skills_checklist.pdf). -Leadership -Motivation -Time management -Delegation -Communication -Research

Show proof Make sure once you add a skill to your resume that you show how you performed it at your job! -Don’t just say: "Great leadership skills." -Prove it: "Excellent leadership skills, demonstrated when I successfully managed a small team of individuals over the course of a three-day fundraising event."

Make a list of your job duties Create a list of your current and past job duties. Focus on more than what is required of you in your current/previous job or what was/is in your actual job description. Think about what you were you responsible for on a daily basis! Which tasks and duties have you done daily and also which ones did you fulfill that were outside what you were hired for?

Record your accomplishments Now it's time to list specific accomplishments. Did your boss recognize you at some point? Did you save a colleague time by helping them to complete a project? Think of achievements that are both large and small. They ALL matter to your next employer!

Thinking about getting your CDL? Now's the time

I recently got my CDL license back in November. I am very happy I made the career transition...I know a lot of people are struggling to find work right now because of businesses closing down.

I would suggest looking into truck driving. There's always a demand, and it's rewarding work in times of crisis like this. I've been making a lot of deliveries to local hospitals and am proud to be part of the team that is helping heal people!

Theres also a great group here on Jobcase that answered a bunch of my questions!!! Go join! https://www.jobcase.com/groups/6a88e3e6-ffb0-4e38-8522-9acba52f6b26

Military Transition

#militarytransition After a career in the military and working as a defense contractor, I am wanting to transition into a leadership position with a civilian company. I'm struggling to make the case that my leadership skills are as solid as anyone's who didn't spend their career in the military. How to best sell my experience?

Struggling

Back in 2018 I decided to make a career change from client facing roles to software developer. I thin like a lot of folks in my shoes, the light at the end of the tunnel is so brilliant that it drowns out the hurdles to get there.
I've tried the self-taught route, I enrolled and completed a coding bootcamp here in #nyc all the while attending networking events, tech events, making connections left & right with the hopes of it landing me atop a stack of resumes. So far, things have panned out the way I had pictured it. Things are way harder than just creating a front-end thing or a full-stack project.
It takes determination, grid and a tough skin, as well, to make it through. I just need to catch a break & I hope one is right around the bend. #interview #stressful #developer #software #tech
