Pre-Trip Inspection

It’s very important that you conduct a pre and post trip inspection before and after your shift. This is not only a safety concern, it’s a DOT regulation. I see truck drivers break down all the time and that’s mainly because they aren’t doing their inspections.

If you’re considering getting your CDL, I highly recommend to watch these videos because they will ask you at the DMV to conduct an inspection. The DMV will ask you for a really detailed inspection which a trucking school will train you to do.

8 Pros and Cons of becoming an owner operator

Here’s a video of some pros and cons if you want to become an owner operator in the trucking industry. 🚛

From my own personal experience and observation as a truck driver, I don’t recommend becoming an owner operator especially in California. There are new laws in California that make it really difficult to earn a profit. California is big on emissions so you’ll need to get your tractor inspected several times a year.

Becoming an owner operator also means you’ll have to get your own medical insurance and lose out on benefits like sick time, vacation time, and bonuses. You’ll also have to do a lot of “Over The Road” driving which means being away from your family, unpredictable weather conditions, irregular sleep patterns, lack of exercise, and unhealthy eating habits.

I personally make a low six figures, have excellent health insurance, amazing benefits, bonuses, PTO, weekends off, home every night, all that without the hassle of being an owner operator. But if you enjoy sight seeing and traveling, becoming an owner operator may be for you. 🛣️

California Diesel Ban for 2036

Looks like trucking manufacturers Ford, General Motors, and Daimler have agreed to the California’s diesel ban that is set for 2036 avoiding a drawn out legal battle. This is a huge win on both sides including the environment with the goal to lower emissions.

Although I’ve been noticing more and more electric semi-trucks at the Long Beach ports, manufacturing the batteries for these electric vehicles are still harmful to the environment. They also need to use large amounts of electricity to charge these semi-trucks which isn’t very economical for carriers, consumers, and our grids. This will cause the cost of goods to increase and possibly put another dent in the U.S economy. So in other words, we are trading one problem to inherit several other problems.

The solution the manufacturers are planning to implement is to manufacture hydrogen fueled semi-trucks. Although the idea is great and environmentally friendly, the hydrogen infrastructure is terribly bad and will take some team work from the trucking industry to correct by 2036. To create a whole new infrastructure can take decades, but apparently the manufacturing giants believe they can get it done. As a truck driver myself, I’m definitely rooting for these industry leaders to get the job done for the sake of our environment and economy.

“How to get a CDL”

As a CDL holder myself, I went through some obstacles and delays trying to get my CDL because there are some very important details that only someone with a CDL can tell you. Whether you’re getting a Class A,B, or C CDL, these are the exact steps you need to take in order obtain a CDL. Keep in mind you cannot just go to trucking school or get paid training by a mega carrier without a permit. You also cannot get a permit without getting a DOT physical from an urgent care. You need a medical certificate before you can even take the knowledge test at the DMV. With that being said here are the steps that I took to get my CDL. 🚛

The first thing you need to do is study for the CDL. Download the DMV study guide from their website. I also recommend downloading the CDL prep app. It’s free and has the same questions as the DMV test. When you are ready to take the air brake and knowledge test, make a DMV appointment. Before your appointment you’ll need a DOT physical from an urgent care. Not all urgent cares offer DOT physicals, so call and find out which one does. They are generally $100 for a medical certificate. When your DMV appointment arrives, take your birth certificate, ID, medical certificate, and two utility bills that prove you live at your residence.

After passing your test you’ll receive a Class A permit and you can either pay $3,000 to enroll in trucking school which is 27 courses 1 hour each course, or you can apply for a trucking company that will provide paid training. Takes around 2-4 months to get your CDL from start to finish depending on the pace you set for yourself. Any other questions feel free to ask.

(FN) Do not take any endorsements, only take the knowledge and air brake test. Studying for any endorsements will only cause information overload. Get your endorsements after you obtain your CDL.

Are You Curious How To Begin Your Career as a Truck Driver?

Looking for a high paying salaried position with flexibility?? Consider a job in trucking! There are many ways to get started with a trucking career, and you can learn more about long haul trucking, becoming an owner operator, regional drivers, and delivery drivers right here!

Some of the requirements for various positions as a driver include attending a driving academy, and becoming certified with your CDL. Then you are free to pursue whichever path fits your career needs best!

Long Haul Trucking

This is the more traditional route for those interested in trucking. Long haul truckers often work for larger companies, have limits on the amount of work they can do in a certain period of time, and often have other aspects of the job to perform - such as vehicle inspections, and possibly unloading cargo.

Owner-Operators

Owner-operators do similar work but the difference is that they lease or own their rigs, and obtain their own clients. In addition to driving, they do their own administrative work as well. They often work in specialized areas such as flatbeds for logging, cattle or livestock, and refrigerated trucks. Larger companies may avoid these specialities and smaller companies can benefit from a niche market.

Regional Drivers

These drivers do shorter hauls and stay somewhat locally. They are usually on the road for 2-3 days at a time, and often work interstate, carrying loads such as furniture or other retail items.

Delivery Drivers

They work extremely locally, and often have more interaction with customers and clients! These drivers carry smaller loads, deliver packages, and earn an hourly wage. If you need to stay closer to home and have a schedule that fits your family's needs, this may be the job for you!
