Class B Passenger Endorsement Test

If you’re not really all that enthusiastic about driving a semi-truck, you can always get a Class B with a passenger endorsement. 🚌 Bus drivers make pretty good money depending on who you work for. Getting a Class B CDL is also $1,500 cheaper than getting a Class A. 🪪

Here’s the 1st part of the DMV test. ✍️

Class B Passenger Endorsement

Here’s a quick video of a Class B passenger endorsement field test at the DMV. 🚌

The other day I decided I wanted to add a passenger endorsement to my Class A CDL so I can have all my endorsements and create more flexibility and value to my CDL. But when I called to make a DMV appointment, it’s not just a written test, I would have to actually take another road test in a bus. So in order to do this I would have to rent a bus and have the owner present with me. To top it off, if I received my endorsements over one year, I would have to take every endorsement all over again. If you’re not into driving big semi-trucks, your best bet is to get your Class B CDL with a passenger endorsement. You can also get your hazmat and tankers endorsement as well. I highly recommend getting all your endorsements to create more flexibility and value to yourself. 💰

Any questions on how to get your CDL feel free to drop a comment and I can tell you the exact steps to take. 🚌🚛

Parallel Parking a Semi-Truck

Here’s a parallel parking demonstration of what a DMV skills test looks like. I failed my alley dock parking the first try, but my second try I was able to pass this parallel park. Trucking school prepares you for all skills and driving test and they go over it with you until you get it right. If you’re interested in getting a CDL, I recommend watching this video. 🚛🪪

Automated Ports

Here’s a glimpse of a Los Angeles/Long Beach automated port where I haul loads out of. There are two fully automated ports and I can say the transaction is really smooth as compared to ports with longshoremen workers. I was able to speak with a longshoremen about the automation, and he said they are not entirely fully automated. He said there are at least 8 operators controlling the automation and there are times when the automation malfunctions and the longshoremen have to step in and correct the issues. The automated ports will most likely not replace all jobs, because new jobs will be created when the machines need to be controlled or repaired. Any jobs that are replaced, the union and the ports have agreed to compensate the longshoremen until they retire. 🚢

If you are interested in obtaining a CDL and you live near a port, I highly recommend getting your (TWIC) card and find a carrier that hauls out of the ports. Port drivers make 6 figures, the work schedule is Monday-Friday, 10-12 hour shifts, home every night, no touch freight, and depending on your carrier all work is local. It’s the easiest money I’ve made as a blue collar worker. If you have any questions about getting a CDL or port work, feel free to ask away. 🚛

How long it takes to stop an 80,000lb semi-truck

This is an excellent video to watch for anyone interested in getting a CDL. This video demonstrates the stopping distance of a semi-truck when it’s loaded versus when it’s not. The braking distance is on the DMV test so it’s a good idea to start getting this information in now to increase retention. This will also give a good understanding to non CDL holders of how long it takes for a truck driver to stop. 🛑

Any questions on this topic or in general, feel free to drop a comment. 🤔

Unauthorized Semi-Truck Parking

I was reading an article about a Greyhound bus colliding with a semi-truck on July 12 killing three people and injuring 14 in Highland, Illinois. This was the result of a semi-truck parking on an exit ramp which is unauthorized parking and cannot be used as a rest area. DOT regulations have strict rules that prevent truck drivers from driving past 16 hours or they’ll receive a citation and penalty for breaking this rule. With this rule in place “Over the Road” OTR drivers tend to just pull over on the highway and rest for 8 hours which is illegal. 🚫

Apparently the state of Illinois does not have enough rest areas for truck drivers. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating this accident to determine how they can prevent tragedies like this in the future. Although I’m not an OTR driver, from my personal experience truck rest areas are very difficult to find and can be really spread out making it a hassle for drivers looking to rest, fuel up, and put air in their tires if they need to. 🚛

If you’re a new driver, I recommend improving your time management skills, navigation skills, and organizational skills so you can minimize any possible dangerous situations like this. Know your routes and rest areas along the way. You can utilize apps like “TruckMap” that will provide you with truck routes, rest areas, scale locations, and other features that are useful for truck drivers. I am providing the link to the article for those that want to read it. 📖

Should a new driver get a Hazmat endorsement?

In this video the trainer says you shouldn’t get a Hazmat endorsement if you’re a new driver. I disagree and from my own personal experience, I was hauling Hazmat out of the ports two months after getting my CDL. I also got a $4 raise just for having a Hazmat endorsement.

I recommend just getting all your endorsements so you can be more flexible and valuable. Remember there is a huge shortage of truck drivers out there and many don’t like the endorsements because it comes with more responsibilities. Just get your endorsements after you get your CDL. And when you’re ready take the Hazmat test first because it’s the most difficult. ☣️ 🚛

Any questions feel free to reach out and I can tell you the steps I took to make more money with very little driving experience.

How to get your Class A

From my own personal experience on getting my Class A, if you follow these exact steps you’ll prevent any delays on getting your CDL. I recommend only taking your “Knowledge Test” and “Air Brake Test”. Take the endorsements after you get your CDL to avoid information overload. 🤯

The first thing you need to do is study for the CDL. Download the DMV study guide from their website. I also recommend downloading the CDL prep app. It’s free and has the same questions as the DMV test. When you are ready to take the air brake and knowledge test, make a DMV appointment. Before your appointment you’ll need a DOT physical from an urgent care. Not all urgent cares offer DOT physicals, so call and find out which one does. They are generally $100 for a medical certificate. When your DMV appointment arrives, take your birth certificate, ID, medical certificate, and two utility bills that prove you live at your residence. ✅

After passing your test you’ll receive a Class A permit and you can either pay $3,000 to enroll in trucking school which is 27 courses 1 hour each course, or you can apply for a trucking company that will provide paid training. Takes around 2-4 months to get your CDL from start to finish depending on the pace you set for yourself. Any other questions feel free to ask. 🚛
