What do you do after working for a company like Amazon, UPS , Macy’s, etc. after the holiday hiring season? I know these employers will let many people go after January but was curious what people did after

So, before I get started, please understand not everyone has the motivation to do this so don't feel discouraged. Everyone can do this, but many will fail due to the inability to understand what failure really means.

I've been out of college since 2016. I had a decent temp. role that was indefinite with the possibility of going permeant which in basically means you're stuck at a temp for the next 5 years. So I left that job for yet, another temp role that was promising to go perm after 3 months.

Same story.

Then in my 3rd temporary role with the same promises and my patience as pretty much up. So I decided that I have a college degree, some experience in Marketing and a very strong knowledge of analytical as well as digital marketing knowledge. So I started my own consulting firm.

So here is the pros of having your own DBA consulting firm.

  1. You're the boss, the professional, the one people are hiring to do a job they cannot. Due to time, limited capabilities, etc. they need you to do a job. So instead of working for someone else you now work for yourself in a sense.

  2. You can set your own rates. Now I was making fantastic money working as a consultant because marketing is one of those necessities many people need but don't necessarily want.

  3. You can hold onto this consulting firm EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE A FULL-TIME JOB!!!! Having this on yoru resume alone will get you interviews and people will take you seriously. By far more seriously than if you have worked for various other companies.

Now I say all this to say this. While I still run my own company, having my own consulting firm lets me bat away all these pesky temporary roles. Temp roles are PERMENANTLY TEMP! Very rarely do you see people getting hired out of a temp role. It happens but so many factors go into the position most companies will keep you there for as long as you wish to be there.

The other huge bonus, recruiters from the companies themselves will reach out to you. This is beyond what any recruiting agency will offer you because the company recruiter knows everything and if they say you got the job, there's no two ways about it, you got it. Since running my own company and updating my resume on all the job sites, I've only had to apply to a few so it shows some activity but overall so many recruiters from large companies such as BJ's have reached out to me. Regardless if I applied or not.

Then came my most recent job opportunity that found me. I have now been hired at a huge international engineering company that is known across the U.S. and over seas. They found me and the best part THEY WANT ME. The feeling of being wanted by a large company is overwhelming and exiting. By starting my own company as well as picking up these temp jobs gave me the job experience ammunition to pursue my dreams.

I say all this to tell you, never give up. When opportunities shoot you down, create them yourself. Starting your own company isn't easy because you have to go after the clients yourself BUT just having that on your resume. If you're not happy with the way your life is going, change it. Create your dream job and go after it. Eventually opportunity will find you. But if you give up....and stop trying....if you turn off the lights and go home then how is opportunity going to find you from the darkness?
