They normally find it easier to find jobs when the unemployment rate is low but with unemployment still in the high 5's it turns out many companies are now looking to give a second chance to the 20 MM Americans with a criminal record when it comes to hiring.

Second Chances - Preparing for release
Hi All,
I have an incarcerated friend getting out in about a year (!!!) and we are trying to figure out what I can do to help him get a job asap when he is out. For all of those who are formerly incarcerated, what did you wish you had done beforehand? He doesn’t have a meeting with the parole board for 6 more months - should we wait until then to start looking? What information did you need when applying for jobs? He has previous experience with warehouse work, but definitely also has an interest in working with animals (maybe at a kennel or doggy daycare or something), but I am sure he would be down with any sort of work.
This is a pretty confusing process and neither of us have experience with it, so any info about your experience that you could provide would be much appreciated! Thank you for reading!

Hi! I am a returning citizen. I made some mistakes in the past and have a felony record. I haven’t had anything negative on my record for almost 20 years and I’m having a hard time finding a job because of failing the background check. People have said that employers don’t go farther back than 7-10 years when doing a background check but that is not true. I have paid my debt to society and have even got my voting rights back. TODAY begins Ban the Box in Lakeland, FL!!
City Manager Shawn Sherrouse has implemented a "Ban the Box" process that will remove the questions about prior criminal convictions for job applicants!!
The new process goes into effect today, February 1st.
Ban the Box legislation started in 1998 with Hawaii being the first state to pass a law restricting employers from inquiring about a candidate’s criminal background prior to an offer being extended.
Since then, legislation has been enacted in 33 states and more than 150 municipalities. The state of Florida has not implemented similar legislation but several cities and counties within the state have Ban the Box initiatives including Tampa, Orlando, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Tallahassee and Sarasota, just to name a few.
The questions about criminal history will be removed from the City’s initial hiring process and potential job candidates that may have a criminal offense in their background will not be judged at the time of submitting their application.
Instead, criminal background checks that are part of the hiring process when a potential candidate is being considered for a position.
