Seeking Information From Post Release Felons: What Challenges Are You Facing In Your Job Search & Post Release Success?

I'm keenly interested in knowing what challenges or obstacles post release felons are dealing with when looking for work. I want to know what state you live in, what kind of help are you getting to find work, what resources are available to you and who do you have to help you with everything you're required to do?

Are you on parole?

Are you required to find work within a certain period of time?

Do you have obstacles preventing you from finding a job such as addiction issues, housing, medical or mental health issues, transportation, education or lack of post release support & resources?

Tell me what your experience has been and tell me what you've learned from it. What do you think you need to be successful and to not reoffend or end up back in prison. Are you struggling with PV's due to lack of support or resources?

Share with me in the comments below. Your perspective is important.

How convicted felons live as second-class citizens in America because of their felony conviction?

In America, a felony conviction frequently results in a lack of options for success, such as employment and housing. At the age of 17, Corey Frazier of Flint, Michigan, was charged with open murder, felony firearm, and armed robbery. He won an appeal after 17 years and was released in 2012. He has since worked in criminal justice reform and with at-risk teens, and he now lives in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife and family.

My best advice to those facing these challenges is to educate yourself in regards to the laws in place in your state and find out if you live in a Ban the Box state. Explore what industries in your state have signed the Fair Chance Pledge.

Consider the nature of your charges & convictions & set your job search expectations accordingly. For example, you can't work in a cash handling role if you were convicted of financial fraud or theft and many employers won't hire a candidate who has been convicted of felony assault.

Consider jobs that may require skills you acquired while incarcerated. There are warehouse, manufacturing, assembly, driving & delivery jobs, jobs in hospitality maintenance, general labour such as landscaping and trade jobs like plumbing, electricians, masonry & carpentry that you may qualify for in an apprenticeship role. Trucking and Logistics companies hire felons, depending on the nature of the conviction, the time passed since the conviction & whether or not you are under post- prison supervision. Flexjobs.com has leads for remote roles that often don't check backgrounds and offer a variety of roles to explore.

Think outside the box. Know your transferable skills. Create a resume & cover letter that "bullet-points" your best skills. Note your achievements even if they occurred during your sentence such as academic or course completions and certificates you earned. Attention to detail matters. Not just hard/technical skills but soft skills as well. We've discussed these within this group before.

Write a "Letter of Explanation" that explains your absence from the workforce. This is a positive tool to present when interviewing. Follow this link to my post for this group that will explain & provide examples. LOE post

Avail yourself of organizations dedicated to providing resources, information and assistance to felons, all available via the internet. Some are state specific, others are nationwide. helpforfelons.org, felonyrecordhub.com, inmates to entrepreneurs.org and others are there to help. Make an effort to explore your options and don't give up.

Remember, everyone is having to face challenges in the current hiring market so don't let yourself fall in to a negative mindset. Perseverance, dedication & patience are your best job search tools right now.

There are several factors that have an influence on whether an individual becomes institutionalized. These include the length of the sentence, the type of crime committed, access to education and rehabilitation programs, and personal determination. Long sentences and limited opportunities for growth can increase the likelihood of institutionalization, while access to resources and support can aid in resisting its pull.

For some, the prison environment becomes a way of life. These individuals, often referred to as "institutionalized," have adapted to the structured routine and the survival tactics that are essential for their daily existence. Institutionalization can lead to a sense of dependency on the prison system, with some becoming so accustomed to their surroundings that reintegration into society becomes a daunting task.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are those who manage to avoid falling into the clutches of institutionalization. These individuals are more resilient and can maintain a sense of self-identity and purpose despite the challenging environment. They engage in educational and rehabilitative programs, seek personal growth, and develop the skills necessary for life beyond bars.

Regardless of the label, success after prison is possible. It's all about stepping out and back in as someone who has no other option but to make it. Whether we were paying attention or not during our time away, we learned much about ourselves. Be the kind of potential employee you would want to hire.

If you're struggling and feeling as though it would be easier to give up and go back, bring to thought that empty loneliness that engulfed you, those days when you said to yourself, "Anywhere is better than here." #success #institutionalized #motivation

I have High functioning Autism and it is hard for me to interact with people. I do not do well with schooling as it is hard for me to pay attention. My ideal job would be to work remotely/from home with little people interaction and no phone calls.
