Almost lost out on a job offer due to a bad reference
Was hired to do virtual workshops, but the company didn't get the contracts they hired me for, so they assigned me other work I wasn't qualified for. I raised an objection to this, and the owner said, "just do your best", which I did. When they continued to not get work, I was verbally notified that I was being laid off. This week, a potential employer did a background check on me, and even though the owner rated me 'Excellent' on all performance categories, they reported that I had been terminated and wrote a very negative review, saying I performed poorly (on the duties I wasn't hired for). I disputed this with the background search vendor, stating that I was not provided any documented notification that I was terminated. Any suggestions?
