Today in my virtual job search

I came across a job that looked interesting – Onboarding and training new CSRs – I’ve done this before, I’m great at it and I enjoy the work – the pay isn’t insulting. National company verified the job on their website.

On the very first page of the application – they ask birthdate and SSN, I’m not thrilled (I like to save I’m pushing 60 for later in the process) but I can’t proceed without the fields being completed.

I tried a new app for ATS – pasted my current resume’ in one field – pasted the job description in the next field – the app compares and makes suggestions – only two, though.

  • When did the word “PROACTIVE” become negative?
  • I have trained, trainer, training, onboarding, coached, etc… but the app wants me to add “transfer of knowledge” – I did, it didn’t feel right or natural – more like something from The Giver – but HEY if that change gets my application to a live person, I’ll deal with it.

After I hit submit, I got a MYSQL error – I redid the whole process an hour later and my application was accepted – woohoo!

Then I saw the position has been open since November? I’d love to know why…

What does "flexible schedule" mean to you?

I see flexible schedule in a lot of job postings and have learned it doesn't mean the same thing at every company.

I had one job that the schedule was SO flexible my work schedule was different every week and I had zero say in it.

I've had jobs that required my presence a certain number of hours a day, whenever I had time but I had to work those hours straight - no walking away and coming back.

Other jobs where as long as all tasks were done - didn't have to be on one setting - life was good for all concerned.

One company "allowed" me to take my lunch hour when I wanted (between noon and 2 pm).

When you talk about wanting a flexible schedule - what are you looking for?

Ever want to say no to a raise?

I knew I was near the next tax bracket when annual bonuses and performance raises would be distributed - I had experienced my take home pay going down with previous raises.

After unsuccessfully trying to negotiate for a lower raise with more PTO, I went with the maximum allowed for my 401k, life insurance, FSA, everything that would be deducted pre-tax – it worked, that year I did see a higher take home.

If you’re getting ready to ask for a raise or negotiate with a new employer and are unsure how your tax situation will change you can find free tax charts & apps online to try different scenarios and keep more of your paycheck.

For those who are currently or have worked remote jobs.....

How did you find your virtual job? Did you go to a hiring event? Did you see a job post? Did a friend tell you about it?

Was the company filling one position or were several hired and trained at the same time?

Did you pick your career or did your career pick you?

I know very few people who are working the job they wanted to be when they grew up.

I was going to be a child psychologist, my son was going to photograph bands - I'm a Virtual Assistant - I do use my education dealing with customers, he works a job he loves outdoors but no camera.

How about you - what were you going to be?

Crossing state lines, virtually

If you're looking for a work from home, remote, virtual job broaden your search!

Not all companies require that you're in the same city (or state).

As you're looking at the Job Board don't limit yourself by location.

If you're working for a company in a different state YOUR state employment laws apply, state & local taxes will be withheld based on your state.

Employers usually work within their time zone, a good manager will remember that time difference when scheduling meetings.

Can great reviews and surveys be a problem?

Yes, they can if there is a large discrepancy between workers in the same job role.

If one or two CSRs consistently get 5 star surveys and others are averaging 3 stars support is not consistent for all clients.

Every client deserves the best support possible.

The company I worked with told two of us to slow down, lower our support level - even after we offered to organize and lead ongoing training sessions for all CSRs.

Have you ever been told to tone it down at work?

3 Ways To Mentally Prepare for Work! 🧠

Customer Service Expert Kamaria Joy wants to help you protect your energy in a demanding job!

Kamaria promotes the idea of A.C.E. - or Authentic Client Encounters! She then shares 3 tips to help you prepare to provide the highest quality support possible:

  1. How can you improve your customer experience when you are coming into work with a negative mindset?

Kamaria suggests daily meditation or motivational videos to help you create a positive mindset. The right attitude can translate in the energy exchanges you have with your clients! 💞🧘🏾‍♀️

  1. Review your plans, goals, and priorities DAILY! Write them down if you can and keep those in mind. 📝

Remember your WHY! What keeps you going, and what your reason is for doing this work. That way when you’re stressed you don’t fall into a negative spiral and struggle to keep up with the challenge.

  1. Even if you aren’t 100% sure about your “why”- you can ask HOW or WHAT can I do to create authentic client encounters today?

Are there steps I can take to move forward? HOW can I do my best to assist my customers just for today?

Focus on your greatness both inside and outside of work! 🥇

  • What do you do to prepare for a long day of dealing with unhappy clients? 😅

  • How do you adjust your mindset to be ready for work? 🧘
