Yes, cover letters absolutely still matter — especially in today’s competitive job market.
Here’s why:
✅ They show genuine interest – A tailored cover letter proves you're not just mass applying. It tells employers why you want this job at their company.
✅ They highlight personality – Your CV lists skills; your cover letter shows who you are. It’s a chance to explain why you're a good fit and how your values align with the role.
✅ They fill in the gaps – Got a career change, employment gap, or unfinished degree? A cover letter helps you frame your story and focus on your strengths.
✅ Some employers still expect one – Especially in industries like education, healthcare, nonprofit, or any role that involves communication or writing skills.
That said, it should always be brief, relevant, and tailored. A generic, copied-and-pasted letter can hurt more than help.

Nope I think if I was looking for a job and I applied for it it would be your loss to not hire me . I don't waste my time with cover letters
In all honesty, cover letters are looked over. Been a store manager for many years. Your experiace matter. How you delicate your duties for the position. These things show knowledge. All they are looking for. All that stands out. Cover letters are a thing of the past. Everything's on line. They do not ask for a cover letter on line. So no cover letters no longer matter.
