Common Mistakes Servers Make During Shifts and How to Avoid Them

Working as a server can be challenging, and there are some common mistakes we all make during shifts. Fortunately, these mistakes are easy to prevent, helping us get through our shifts with less stress.

One frequent issue is miscommunication with your table. After taking orders for food or drinks, it's essential to repeat the guest's order back to them and double-check for accuracy. This simple step can prevent misunderstandings and ensure that customers receive exactly what they requested.

During rush hours, it's almost inevitable to make mistakes on the POS system, such as ringing in the wrong food or drinks. The best way to avoid these errors is to carefully review the order on the POS before sending it to the kitchen or bar. By taking a moment to verify everything, you can reduce the likelihood of errors and improve overall service quality.

If you have any other suggestions to prevent mistakes, please, share them with us in the comment. 👇🏻 👇🏻

Breakfast And Lunch Server at Electric Lemon Equinox Hotel Hudson

Being a good server is like being a good cook. Set yourself up for success. Make sure your mise en place is in place before your shift begins, so you're not scrambling during service. Make an abbreviation system of menu itemsfor yourself to speed up order taking. Create the system and follow it, that way you're not accidentally putting in a different item than what you intended WRITE DOWN YOUR ORDER! You may have an exceptional memory, but it's not perfect. It also helps ensure you don't forget to put an order in, and speeds up your time in front of the computer, because you're not trying to recall the order. Cross items off on your order pad as you enter them into the computer. This helps ensure the entire order is entered. Stay out of the fray! Dining rooms are more filled with gossip than a Real Housewives episode. When you leave this restaurant, you likely won't see 99% of these people ever again. Don't involve yourself in the gossip, that way you're not being gossiped about. It's a job, not your life. Treat it that way and you'll have a happier life in the restaurant.
