Preparing to find remote work

I have recently transitioned to remote work due to closure of the small business I work for. A few things that I found companies will require before they allow you to work remotely:

  • Updated security/antivirus software
  • Access to a secure WiFi network
  • Firewall protection
  • A safe, company approved storage solution
  • Access to remote collaboration software (Google Docs, Dropbox, Trello, etc.)
  • Reliable computer or laptop
  • A dedicated space to work efficiently
  • Ability to organize and motivate yourself

Make sure you are familiar with these things before heading into a remote job! It’ll pay off!

Most good companies that have a decent IT staff provide you with a company notebook and VPN at their own expense. You should not have to provide your own. I've been in IT almost 40 years now. And this is good business practices. And their VPN and notebook is their responsibility.

How to ROCK your virtual interview!

During the Coronavirus interviews can still happen, they will likely not be face to face. A virtual interview has a much different feel than in person. Here are 5 tips on how to ROCK it!

1- Dress for success Just because you are not actually in the office face to face doesn’t mean to wear your pj's and just roll out of bed. Prep your clothes the night before just as you normally would. Iron out any wrinkles and make sure you feel confident in what you’ve chosen to wear.

2- Test your technology There is nothing worse than 2 minutes before your virtual interview and your computer is giving you issues, or you can’t seem to login. Whatever tool the company is using to interview you ensure that you can login and know exactly what to do to make the interview happen! Consider doing a quick test the day before as well as a few hours before the interview.

3- Keep your video background clean and clear During the interview make sure to sit in front of a blank background, so that you remain the focal point. To do this simply find a plain wall and put your chair in front of it. Test it first on your computer’s video to see how you will present yourself. Avoid any messy backgrounds and stick with plain and clean!

4- Remove distractions An interview is a serious time so it’s important to ensure all distractions are removed. If children are home with you have a friend or family member watch them for an hour for you while you go into a room where it is quiet. Turn your cell phone OFF so you aren’t glancing at it should a message pop up. Be sure to also close any windows to muffle any noise from outdoors.

5- Watch your body language You won’t have the opportunity to give that firm handshake during a virtual interview so body language is key! Sit up straight, smile, and keep the camera at eye level to avoid looking up or down. It’s been shown that employers are more likely to remember what you said if you maintain eye contact, so stay focused, not on the screen image of the employer, but on the camera itself just as if you were looking directly at them.

Would you rather have an in-person interview or a virtual one?

Hey, I got a new job y'all!! ☺️

In the past 2 weeks, I have interviewed with Conduent. I wasn't impressed with the first position's offer (customer care assistant for CVS) but was contacted about the work from home in-bound position. Well after three interviews, I was offered and accepted the position of Tier 1 Support for Apple!! I get to work remotely from home, full benefits, paid training. Praise God!

I am sharing a link for remote positions but they have so many available across the world in various industries!! Of course if it states United States then it's likely available in any state and remotely. Should you have additional questions etc, feel free to contact me! I'll help you the best that I can! Keep striving y'all...it has been a long time coming but doors are finally opening! Be ready to walk on in when they do!! God Bless!! #WorkFromHome #RemoteWorker https://conduent.taleo.net/careersection/conduent_external_portal/jobsearch.ftl
