It's about Results! (rule #2 for profiles and resumes)

I've been browsing through a lot of Jobcase profiles this morning - particularly ones of folks in the community that are finding difficulty in achieving the next job they desire. There's a trend sticking out to me that is a large mistake most people make. An easy one to correct. And a very impactful one after you do correct it.

Ready for the insight - here it is...effort doesn't get rewarded - RESULTS DO. Of course I know its hard to get results without effort. But, no-one drafts football players because they worked hard at the gym - they get hired for yardage gained in college, sacks made, etc. The Rock doesn't get crazy paydays just because he is talented, its because he generated box office hits - so the expectation is that he can do that again.

When you provide details about a position in a profile or resume, start with the results and follow with the effort (if you really need to state effort). "Consistently garner tips over 20% and generated 100 positive yelp reviews for my restaurant as a lead Waiter" stands out on a waiter resume way more than a list of duties and deeds performed. I, as a restaurant manager & potential employer, see that customers like you and see how that translates to my business success. Or, "Hired 200 employees who exceeded projected retention rates" - is much better than "screened applicant resumes and interviewed as part of talent function in XX company". I, as potential employer hiring you for my HR group, see that you got your job done right - good hires! And now I want to talk to you about how you can do that for me.

You get it. If you are hiring someone for a role you want someone who will drive results for you. Working hard, having effort, saying how you did something fills space but isn't really what its about is it. Its about results. Like it or not, thats what stands out. So - when you as a candidate want to represent your past experience - focus on what resulted from your efforts. And have fun thinking about it too. I bet when you step back you'll realize you have been even more effective in your past than what you thought. And maybe you might think of times you weren't. And when you begin to be more aware of mapping effort to results - then you are on your way to really improving the trajectory of your worklife.

Hope this helps. If it resonates with you - go to your profile now by clicking on your pic in upper right corner here, update descriptions to start sentences with what you achieved and then perhaps how you did it. Then hit the generate resume button on your profile. I think you'll like what you see.....

( - I'll post rule #1 tmw - we talk about it often on Jobcase, but will rewrite about it soon...)

RECOVERING!!!

I am so sorry that I have been out of the loop lately. Since January I have been hospitalized 2 times both times staying at least 3 days or more, ugh..... I have asthma and allergies that were adult onset after having my one and only child. Prior to that I was athletic, competing in many sports throughout my childhood and early adulthood. I still remained very active even after being diagnosed because I love the outdoors and I love being active. It keeps my mind from racing all the time. I just wanted to take a moment to let our community know that I am so grateful to be a part of it and I get inspired on a daily basis to better myself and keep pushing to reach the stars. I know that I am still here for a reason because I have been able to learn and grow from my past mistakes, and GOD knows I probably could have died 10 times over by now, so I am still standing and fighting, stronger than I have ever been searching for my purpose in this life. I know I have one I am just trying to pinpoint it at the moment. My personal life, like that of many others, has been a long and hard battle that makes me who I am today. I have suffered, cried, fallen and gotten right back up every time just brushing off the dirt or mending the wound. I have also experienced the greatest joys, laughed, loved and been loved unconditionally, and that I am forever grateful for. I LOVE MY LIFE...EVERY BATTLE AND VICTORY! I can not express it enough how lucky I am to have been accepted by this community. EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU ROCK, AND FOR THAT I THANK YOU! Please accept my apology for not being as active in the past months but also know that I have still been along in heart and soul. Thanks again!❤❤❤

Praise

I'm glad to read encouragement from jobcase because two of my siblings stayed putting me down when I was out of work for short time and belittling me because I was needing help when I was out of work and didn't have any where to stay and I had to move back home with my mother until I found work. But thank God I'm back working and able to provide for myself with God help. I thank jobcase with people like you all for reading all of your praise report because that's encouraging to me . And it's always good to lift one another up.

Finally!

After 14 months off unemployment I'm delighted to share the news with my fellow Job-caser's that I've finally found a job. I'm not sure if it's the right fit and time will tell but the benefits and pay are pretty good but as we all know, that's doesn't make for a great job. I will continue to be be a frequent contributor encouraging all within earshot (or eyesight in this case) that all is not lost and there's hope for gainful employment out there for all of us and patience, perseverance and prayer really does pay off in the end. Remember, happiness isn't tied to what we do for a living nor is who you are in life defined by your job description. As much as I hate having to quote Jerry Springer, is is right when he closes every show by sating "be good to yourself and each other". I'll take it a step further by saying love yourself and those around you.

Go Hilary Go!

Hey Jobcasers - I wanted to share with you that one of the leaders here in Boston that works tirelessly to serve our Jobcase community everyday took that same drive and energy to run the Boston Marathon today. Hilary always finishes among the top leaders in the Marathon (she was invited to Olympic trials a couple years ago!) and today was no exception. Amazing race, where she powered through difficult weather to triumph. Join me in congratulating her on yet another amazing finish and please know while we serve amazing people in our community we have some equally amazing people, like Hilary, here working for you everyday. #inspiring #congrats #marathon

A HAND UP NOT A HAND OUT

Monday, a friend of mine told me that he was laid off from a major financial company because the company decided to outsource the jobs to India. I told him about jobcase and I sent him a few joblinks.

Yesterday, I reached out to a former client who works for a financial company and she told me to email her his resume , which happened in the next 10 minutes. As I am searching jobs for myself, I am also helping my friend with his job search. I am a firm believer when we help people (even we go through tough times) more doors and opportunities will open to us. #jobsearch #helpafriend #help #outsourcing #unemployment #wordofadvice #behelpful #bekind #beresourceful #keepbelieving #Godwillopendoors #JobcaseroftheDay
