These employees are supplemental to the regular USPS workforce and are temporary workers who unfortunately are not eligible for full employee benefit. Although, there are still options available!
Non-career employees may be required to work any day of the week, including weekends and holidays as scheduled and many may not exceed 360 days of continual employment.
The Postal Service participates in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program, which provides excellent coverage and flexibility with most of the cost paid by the Postal Service. There are many plans available, including Fee-For-Service, Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and High Deductible & Consumer-Driven Health Plans. Employee premium contributions are not subject to most taxes, making health insurance even more affordable.
The Postal Service entitles full-time employees to health insurance coverage for themselves and their dependents, including domestic partners and same-sex partners.
Full-time employees are eligible for health insurance coverage on the first date of hire and must enroll within the first 60 days of employment.
Non-Career Employees are eligible to participate in the United States Postal Service Health Benefit (USPSHB) program and must enroll within the first 60 days of employment.
Employees are eligible to participate in the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). While employees pay the full cost, this group insurance offers excellent coverage at rates made even more affordable because premium contributions are not subject to taxes.
Full-time employees are eligible for dental & vision coverage after they’ve worked for the company for 60 days.
Non-career employees are provided with preventative dental coverage at no additional cost as part of the USPSHB.
Career employees may participate in the Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) Program after one year of service. Tax-free FSA contributions can be used to cover most out-of-pocket health care and dependent care (daycare expenses).
Newly hired postal employees are covered under Social Security and Medicare.
The Postal Service participates in the federal retirement program, which provides a defined benefit (pension), as well as disability coverage. Eligibility is determined by your age and number of years of creditable service.
The Postal Service offers generous annual (vacation) and sick leave.
1 - 3 Years: 13 days of annual leave per year
3 - 15 Years: 20 days of annual leave per year
15+ Years: 26 days of annual leave per year
In addition, full-time employees earn 4 hours per pay period as insurance against loss of income due to illness or accident. Annual and sick leave is prorated based on paid hours for part-time employees.
