Warehouse Cross-Docking

In the warehouse industry there are three types of facilities; manufacturing, distribution, and cross-docking. I personally worked in all three of these facilities and understand how they operate. Cross-docking is probably the easiest to manage because freight comes in one trailer and right into another. A cross-docking warehouse rarely stores any inventory overnight. If you ever decided to own a business in the warehouse industry, cross-docking is the easiest, quickest, and is a low cost start up business. I recommend working in a cross-docking facility before you actually make an attempt to start a business in this industry. Once you understand the functions, just leap frog the the company’s business model. Here’s a short video on how a warehouse cross-docking operates.

Job Titles in a Warehouse

If you’re interested in the warehouse industry and you want to have a career in this field, here’s a video that you’ll want to watch. This video explains the different job titles and their duties. In my 20 years of working in the warehouse industry, about 90% of the management team started out as a warehouse associate which is the entry-level position. I also started out as a warehouse associate and worked my way up to management.

I started out as a warehouse associate and moved around from department to department so I can understand how the different functions of a warehouse work. A strategy I recommend implementing is move up one position, then make lateral moves to different departments then apply for a leadership position. When a company recognizes you understand how the operations work as a whole, you’ll be the top 3 candidate on their list when the time comes. In the book “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” Robert Kiyosaki states “It’s better to know a little about a lot”. Making lateral moves jumping from department to department is what he is referring to. This actually helped me obtain my management position along with my college degrees.

Forklift Demonstration

This gentleman gives an excellent demonstration on how to operate a forklift. If you want to work in a warehouse and are interested on how to operate a forklift, I recommend watching this video.

Most companies forklift certify employees in-house, but there are schools that will certify you for $25-$50 dollars.

Warehouse Manager Questions & Answers

Here’s a 10 minute video on how to answer warehouse manager questions. If you plan on making a career in the warehouse industry, I recommend on having a mindset to hold a leadership position.

When I first became a warehouse supervisor, I already had two business degrees, two professional certifications, and 15+ years working in a warehouses. I had extensive knowledge in safety, leadership, KPI’s, motivation, training, operations, and a variety of other warehouse functions. Warehouses are probably the most dynamic in terms of operations because they have several departments that are needed to meet organizational goals.

I recommend getting cross-trained in every department the warehouse has so you can get a clear understanding on how the operation works and what it needs to succeed.

8 Rules to avoid accidents on a forklift

If you’re applying for a forklift position, safety is the number 1 priority hiring managers love to hear. But it should also be you’re number 1 priority to get you and your coworkers back home in one piece to your family.

I’ve been hired on the spot countless times because I have extensive knowledge on best safe practices and OSHA regulations in a warehouse. When I ever got a walk-thru of the facility, I would point out what’s safe and what’s not safe and management would be impressed. Here’s a quick video on forklift safety.

Stand-Up Forklift

This is a video of how to operate a stand-up forklift. Stand-up’s are used to pick orders or replenish inventory. They increase production because operators don’t have to jump on and off the lift to pick items. They also maximize safety for the operator preventing any long term health problems from jumping on and off the lift.

I operated this lift for 10+ years, but the way I learned was jumping on a stand-up during my lunch break when no one was around. They are very difficult to operate if you don’t have any proper training. If you learn how to operate a stand-up you can pretty much get a job at any warehouse that picks orders using a stand-up. Wages are pretty decent as well so I recommend learning this piece of equipment if you are working in a warehouse.

Great question! There are many employers who offer relocation assistance for warehouse associate positions. Some popular job search providers like Jobcase, Indeed, and Glassdoor can help you find these opportunities. When searching for jobs, make sure to look for keywords like "relocation assistance" or "moving package" in the job description or requirements. It's also a good idea to directly ask potential employers about their relocation policies during the interview process. Best of luck in your job search!
