If you are here, you are probably trying to figure out your unemployment benefits to keep you afloat during this challenging time. Applying for unemployment benefits can be complicated, so we put together these resources to help you navigate.

What is it called?

The Employment Development Department (EDD) runs the state’s Unemployment Insurance (UI) program.


Online is the fastest and easiest way to file your claim. You can file your claim here during the following times:

  • Sunday: 5AM – 8:30PM
  • Monday: 4AM - 10PM
  • Tuesday: Friday: 2AM - 10PM
  • Saturday: 2AM - 8PM

By Phone

The UI Self-Service Phone line offers convenient self-service options for UI claimants to manage their claim by phone. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The UI Self-Service Phone Line provides the following services:

  • Get information on your last payment issued
  • Certify for benefits using EDD Tele-CertSM
  • Hear information on how to file a new UI claim or reopen an existing one
  • Request duplicate 1099G tax information
  • Find local America’s Job Center of California locations

Please note, this number should be used if you do not need to speak with a representative.

Info you need to apply

You will need to provide your personal information and your

  • Last employer information
  • Last date worked and the reason you are no longer working
  • Gross earnings in the last week you worked, beginning with Sunday and ending with your last day of work
  • Information on all employers you worked for during the past 18 months
  • Notice to Federal Employees About Unemployment Insurance, Standard Form 8 (former federal employees only)
  • DD 214 Member 4 copy (ex-military only)
  • Citizenship status, and, if you are not a U.S. citizen, information from your employment authorization document
