Overtime pay for truck drivers

Does your employer pay you overtime? 💰

My company pays their employees overtime after 40 hours. My last employer paid overtime after 8 hours, but it was union. I’m in Los Angeles, so trucking companies tend to pay overtime to attract drivers for long-term employment. 🚛

What are your thoughts on this matter because OTR drivers technically cannot receive overtime pay because they get paid per mile or by load? 🤔

Keep on trucking! 🚛 ⛽️

Steps to get your CDL

The first thing you need to do is study for the CDL. Download the DMV study guide from their website. I also recommend downloading the CDL prep app. It’s free and has the same questions as the DMV test. When you are ready to take the air brake and knowledge test, make a DMV appointment. Before your appointment you’ll need a DOT physical from an urgent care. Not all urgent cares offer DOT physicals, so call and find out which one does. They are generally $100 for a medical certificate. When your DMV appointment arrives, take your birth certificate, ID, medical certificate, and two utility bills that prove you live at your residence.

After passing your test you’ll receive a Class A permit and you can either pay $3,000 to enroll in trucking school which is 27 courses 1 hour each course, or you can apply for a trucking company that will provide paid training. Takes around 2-4 months to get your CDL from start to finish depending on the pace you set for yourself. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Employee Contract

You just recently got your CDL and you have no experience. A carrier offers you a job, but you have to sign an employee contract that is an agreement you will work for that company for two years. 📝

Do you accept the job offer? 🤔

When I first got my CDL I was offered a job with this exact scenario. I turned down the offer because of the possibility of a toxic workplace. I also feel companies that make you sign employee contracts have a high employee turnover rate. Companies with high employee turnover rates automatically present a red flag. 🚩

Turning down this job offer was a really great decision for my career as a commercial driver. I was able to get a job in the Los Angeles ports and now I haul fuel making $140k annually. 🚛⛽️

Falsifying Driver’s Logs

Here’s an interesting topic on “Falsifying Driver’s Logs” that rarely gets talked about. 🤷‍♂️

When I first got my CDL I was hired on by a company that instructed me to falsify my driver’s logs if I worked over 12 hours. The company used a DOT loop hole that allowed carriers to use manual driver’s logs instead of an electronic log book if the drivers worked less then 12 hours. 📖

The penalties for a driver getting caught falsifying drivers logs can be severe that include DMV points and losing your CDL. But whatever the penalties, this violation will stay on a driver’s record. 🪪

As a new driver I did what I was told until I had enough experience to move on to another company like I already planned. Lucky for me I never got caught and I ended up representing a class action lawsuit that cost the company $200k. 💰

If you were in my position as a new driver and you needed the experience, would you falsify your drivers logs to satisfy the company’s request? 🤔

List of free trucking schools in California

Here’s an informative video on how to receive grants from the state of California. 🆓

Keep in mind this video is 5 years old and California is currently running out of money for many programs that offer grants. And although this video targets California, this will give you a general idea on how to research if there are any available grants in your state. ✅

How to start a Hot Shot business

Here’s a video of how to start a Hot Shot business. 🚛

Keep in mind a CDL will more than likely be needed because anything that weighs over 25,000 lbs requires a CDL. 🪪

This is a great business if you want to earn passive income. You can definitely hire someone to drive for you while you go on and work on other projects or even your day job. ✅

Steps to get your Class A or B CDL

Here’s my monthly post on how to get your CDL if you’re interested in getting into the trucking industry. 🪪

These steps must be followed exactly the way I am explaining them or the process will be delayed. ✅

The first thing you need to do is study for the CDL. Download the DMV study guide from their website. I also recommend downloading the CDL prep app. It’s free and has the same questions as the DMV test. When you are ready to take the air brake and knowledge test, make a DMV appointment. They are generally $100 for a medical certificate. When your DMV appointment arrives, take your birth certificate, ID, medical certificate, and two utility bills that prove you live at your residence. 📚

7 tips on how to become an owner-operator

Here are 7 tips on how to become an owner-operator. 💡

  1. Understanding what an owner-operator entails. ✅

  2. Have experience. ✅

  3. Understanding the costs. ✅

  4. Know how to generate revenue. ✅

  5. Buy or lease a truck. ✅

  6. Obtain proper documentation. ✅

  7. Ask yourself. ✅

My personal opinion I would never become an owner-operator unless it’s hauling for the fuel industry. ⛽️ There’s a lot more money and less driving involved. You’re local and home every night. 🏡
