Keep in mind that there will be holiday seasonal positions opening up soon - especially in retail. And quite often they will keep you on. Also - H&R Block hires for tax season - you don't have to have experience with taxes - they have Office Support positions. When you start there - they will call you every year. You can also take courses to learn about doing income taxes - and get a permanent position. Just a thought - anything would be good at this point - you can continue to apply while working - it's usually a couple of months. I figure it's better than sitting around counting cobwebs on my ceiling!

Start to apply NOW for holiday / seasonal retail jobs
Lots of stores start to hire for the holiday season in early September.
If you are thinking about working full- or part-time for the Cmas season, now’s a good time to get all your work history information in order so that applying on line is easier and faster for you. I believe almost every retailer hires extra help for the holidays, certainly all the national stores do, such as Macys, KOHLS, Target, Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, Walgreens, Lowe’s, Best Buy, GAP, Penneys, Dicks Sporting Goods, PetSmart, IKEA, and so on. ~ The KOHLS store where I work part-time is hiring NOW and I think this may be true in many cities across the country.
In my experience some of the advantages are, in no particular order:
- employee discounts
- generally, busy times that make shifts go by more quickly
- can be fun depending on management, co-workers, your own attitude, and your determination to try to have fun no matter what (!)
- helping customers who are grateful for your assistance
- opportunities to pick up additional shifts if you want them and are available to take them
- chance of being asked to stay on after other seasonal people are laid off in early January
- meet and interact with new people who may have job tips
- learn new skills and beef up your resume with current work experience
Each store has its own tasks to staff, for example, unloading trucks and preparing merchandise for the floors; checkers at the registers; people who put out all the new merchandise, people who “recover” after the store closes; cash office people; security personnel; janitors/housekeeping staff; assistant managers; back office admin people, etc.
Now thru Sept is a good time to apply for the upcoming Cmas season if you'd like to work anywhere that hires on extra staff for the busy time of the year. Good Luck to us all!
