Would you prefer to apply Automatic Gratuity to six and more people or let them tip without automatic gratuity at the restaurant?
Auto gratuity features are available with modern POS platforms. Most restaurants will only apply the automatic gratuity fee to larger parties of six or more people.
Some restaurants will do this without prior request and will state this policy on their menus, usually listed near the bottom of the menu.
Some restaurants receive complaints about automatic gratuity from customers. Sometimes patrons do not pay attention to their checks. They tipped additionally.
I used to work in a restaurant the server needed to get a signature from a customer if patrons tipped additionally on top of the automatic gratuity. It was proof that the customer was willing to tip the server additionally. If there is no sign from the patrons, the restaurant does not allow us to take additional tips.
I worked in a restaurant that doesn't allow me to apply the automatic gratuity if a group party is more than six people. In the past, the restaurant received complaints because of the automatic gratuity.
In the end, automatic gratuity is the guaranteed tip for servers. Especially after taking care of the large group party and providing top service for them.
Unfortunately, some people are still out there who are not willing to tip their server enough after demanding attention interaction while dining in. I have an experienced group of people who spent 500 dollars. They tipped me five dollars.

@Nur Yunlu that's a great question. I think the auto-tip for large parties should happen for the servers. Normally, you don't get many other tables in your section if you take on that large party so this is the table that is going to make or break your shift. Therefore, as a server I liked the auto-gratituity. As a customer, I'm okay with it and happy to tip on extra for exceptional service.

I have worked the bar and restaurants and I am a person who tips based on value of service provided. Good service equals good tips. To automatically charge me 20% for a service that I may or may not agree with is wrong. If you don’t deserve a 20% tip I’m not giving you one. And management will probably hear about it. Want to be an exceptional server you bet I will tip well. And oftentimes mgmt will hear about it. Auto tipping is punishing good patrons for bad ones. I have tipped servers for bad patrons before as well. Can’t stand 🤬🤬🤬🤬 that are too self absorbed to care for their servers. Besides that if it’s a large party w a split check they get better tips as a whole by patrons than not

It’s federally illegal to add an auto gratuity to a check, since January of 2015, grandfathered in and able to be enforced since January of 2016. Just FYI.

I'm not a fan of auto gratuity as a patron but I also believe that if the server is kind and working hard that the tip should be higher than 20%

I believe that automatically gratuity would take the place of a great service. I love to tip great food and great service. I also love to get paid what l am worth. Not what everyone is worth.

I don't like it at all, the tip was originally added for a job well done or a thank you for your services, anymore you do not get the good services and the expectation is there

I like the automatic

Ya forshore

My last restaurant experience was very poor. A favorite spot of my boyfriend's but he knows I won't eat there again, no matter who's paying. The server was a flippant older woman who was overtly rude to me when I asked a question while patronizing my boyfriend, almost flirting. She never came back to check on us. I had to ask a busboy for coffee refills. She also wasn't wearing a face mask in compliance with the mandate at the time. She was wearing only a face shield which doesn't protect anyone and is not in accordance with guidelines. I gave the restaurant a bad review when Google solicited one from me. But I praised the busboy by name.
I personally liked the automatic gratuity for larger parties. It guaranteed a tip and the customer can always add to it as well.
