Ice Road Trucking

Here’s a quick clip of an Ice Road Trucker hauling a heavy load over thin ice. 🚛 ❄️

I couldn’t find the correct salary for these special drivers, but I’m pretty sure it’s well over $150k annually. You couldn’t pay me a million a year to haul these types of loads. Far too dangerous and way too cold for me. 💰 🥶

How much would you need to make to become an Ice Road Trucker? 🤔

DOT Medical Certification

Here’s a video to show you what the DOT physical is like. This physical is mandatory and is generally $100 at most urgent cares. You’ll need to take this physical before you even take the permit test. When it’s time to take your CDL permit test, the DMV will ask for your medical certificate. They will not let you take the knowledge test if you don’t provide this document. I made this mistake myself and had to reschedule my DMV appointment setting me back two weeks of the CDL process. Keep in mind if you have diabetes, you’ll be denied if you inject insulin. It has to be in pill form. 🏥

Commercial Driver’s License

Start off 2024 by taking the steps to get your Class A and on the road to a 6 figure career. This is the year you stop procrastinating and get into an industry that will allow you to work anywhere in the nation! 🚛

The first thing you need to do is study for the CDL. Download the DMV study guide from their website. I also recommend downloading the CDL prep app. It’s free and has the same questions as the DMV test. When you are ready to take the air brake and knowledge test, make a DMV appointment. Before your appointment you’ll need a DOT physical from an urgent care. Not all urgent cares offer DOT physicals, so call and find out which one does. They are generally $100 for a medical certificate. When your DMV appointment arrives, take your birth certificate, ID, medical certificate, and two utility bills that prove you live at your residence. ✅

After passing your test you’ll receive a Class A permit and you can either pay $3,000 to enroll in trucking school which is 27 courses 1 hour each course, or you can apply for a trucking company that will provide paid training. Takes around 2-4 months to get your CDL from start to finish depending on the pace you set for yourself. Any other questions feel free to ask. 💬

Happy New Year’s! 🥂

Florida Rock Tank Lines

If you’re a new CDL driver, Florida Rock Tank Lines might catch your interest! 🪪

Although new grads won’t be able to haul petroleum, you can still haul non-hazardous materials with a tanker. This is a great way to get experience hauling a tanker and get the opportunity to haul fuel when you get 15 months experience. ⛽️

Watch the video to see the qualifications and benefits this carrier has to offer. 👀

Women in Trucking

Here’s a news report from two years of how women truck drivers are making a positive impact on the trucking industry. 👩

When I first got my Class A permit I actually wanted to drive dump trucks and had zero intentions of driving 18 wheelers. But I happened to land a team driving job and was going to quit as soon as I got my CDL. I was only at the company just to get hands on experience and get paid for it. I was delivering fish at odd hours in freezing cold reefers. It was terrible and I hated it. 🐟 🥶

But one day I seen a female driver walking around nonchalantly and relaxed looking at reefers. I asked my trainer what she did because I could immediately recognize she didn’t do what we did. He explained to me that she works the ports and you need a TWIC card. He also told me that she pretty much just waits around and makes really good money by rubbing his thumb and index finger together. That’s when I knew I had to get into the ports. After receiving that information, I got myself into the ports two months later with another company. 🚢

I’ll never forget how inspired I was by Vanessa. This was a life changing moment for me because I’m not sure if I would be able to do the things I’m doing today if it wasn’t for her.

If you’re a woman and have doubt that you can drive an 18 wheeler, believe me you can and it’s not difficult as it seems. 🚛

If anyone is interested in getting a CDL, drop a comment and I’ll explain the exact steps on how to obtain a CDL the way I did. ⤵️

How to Drive a Manual Semi Truck

This is a short 5 minute video of a driver demonstrating on how to drive a 10 speed manual semi-truck. Although most trucking companies have automatic tractors, it’s very important that you take the DMV field test with a manual tractor because you’ll have restrictions on your CDL if you take the test with an automatic truck.

I struggled with this in the beginning because I didn’t know how to double clutch. Double clutching is when you shift from 1st gear, go into neutral, than go into 2nd gear. Every time you shift gears you need to go into neutral which causes you to push the clutch in. Also, in this video he calls a little switch a divider. But some call it a splitter. A splitter needs to be lifted when you go from 5th into 6th gear. It also needs to be pushed back down when you go from 6th back down to 5th gear. Another tip I would like to mention is that if you are hauling an empty container, you can start from 2nd or 3rd gear. You only want to start from 1st gear if you are hauling a load. 🚛

If you have any questions about this video or want to know the steps on how to get a CDL feel free to drop a comment. 🤔

Automated Ports

Here’s a glimpse of a Los Angeles/Long Beach automated port where I haul loads out of. There are two fully automated ports and I can say the transaction is really smooth as compared to ports with longshoremen workers. I was able to speak with a longshoremen about the automation, and he said they are not entirely fully automated. He said there are at least 8 operators controlling the automation and there are times when the automation malfunctions and the longshoremen have to step in and correct the issues. The automated ports will most likely not replace all jobs, because new jobs will be created when the machines need to be controlled or repaired. Any jobs that are replaced, the union and the ports have agreed to compensate the longshoremen until they retire. 🚢

If you are interested in obtaining a CDL and you live near a port, I highly recommend getting your (TWIC) card and find a carrier that hauls out of the ports. Port drivers make 6 figures, the work schedule is Monday-Friday, 10-12 hour shifts, home every night, no touch freight, and depending on your carrier all work is local. It’s the easiest money I’ve made as a blue collar worker. If you have any questions about getting a CDL or port work, feel free to ask away. 🚛

Trucker Path App

Here’s a useful app for any new or experienced truck drivers. 📱

I personally don’t use any trucker apps because I haul out of the ports and go to the same local locations to drop off my loads. But using trucker apps can be very useful if you’re an OTR driver. These apps will tell you where the scales and rest areas are at. They will also help you avoid city streets with weight limits on them. I used to use TruckMap, but there are many others you can pick and choose from. I recommend looking at the ratings before you download them. 🚛

Pre-Trip Inspection

It’s very important that you conduct a pre and post trip inspection before and after your shift. This is not only a safety concern, it’s a DOT regulation. I see truck drivers break down all the time and that’s mainly because they aren’t doing their inspections.

If you’re considering getting your CDL, I highly recommend to watch these videos because they will ask you at the DMV to conduct an inspection. The DMV will ask you for a really detailed inspection which a trucking school will train you to do.
