My steps toward finally getting back into the work force after surviving a stroke and brain surgery last year.

I suffered a spinal stroke last year while driving home from work. A spinal stroke is basically when matter, in my case, a blood clot travels from spin to brain causing the actual stroke. Doctors said a sudden rise in my blood pressure could have and was likely the reason the blood clot from the back of my neck decided to move. That made sense to me as my then, current employment situation was extremely stressful. I was working with 16-25 year olds, males mainly, in the job corps program through the company Insights Training Group. A student who had managed to fool every other staff members...but I could read her like a magazine, didn't like me as I kept leveling the playing field for the student government election on campus by keeping it 100% fair....she didn't like that. She went to my Head of HR and filed a false claim/report that a student and I were having an affair...this was absolutely UNTRUE! And unfounded as there were cameras everywhere! He was my dorm president and yes...we spent a great deal of time around each other....we had to...he was in a position of managment in the dorm...under me. Nonetheless, this report was based on an inappropriate comment my student had made about or in reference to me while off campus at Student Government Camp... somewhere I WASN'T EVEN PRESENT!! If you've never been looked upon by your HR lady as a possible pedofile...let me just say...it's sobering!! With one bullshit sentence, this other student who, out of spite, could have ruined my career as I've only worked with Children, my reputation, my family and their lives...and did NOT CARE! I was given the chance to defend myself...I was successful, of course, as I was telling the truth, however, was still punished because I was stripped from my all male dormitory the facility had bestowed upon me, ripped from my students who I had gotten to know and love deeply as my own, and transferred to the all female dorm which I HATED!! But the student was never punished for filing a false claim against staff, became SGA president, and to boot, I later discovered another staff member was in on it and encouraged it. This staff member did overnight shift in my dorm, so we ran the dorm together... supposed to be a team, however, never underestimate the power of jealousy. He hated the students listened to me and showed me a great deal of respect as opposed to him. He wanted me gone and he figured out a way. He then continued to bully me by coming to my all female dorm and leaving sticky notes in reference to my no longer running the dorm I loved....I also overheard the female student who filed the report state she was TRYING to get rid of me while she was with a group of her peers and tried to bully other students to file false reports on me. I immediatly emailed my HR rep to set up a meeting. Then, on my way home that night, I suffered a stroke, car accident and underwent brain surgery the following morning. I 100% believe the stress I was forced to endure was the cause of my stroke on my birthday....then, 12 weeks later, I was terminated from this job I loved so much and was great at for being unable to return by the 12 week medical leave bestowed by the company I worked for. Basically, they caused the stress which caused the stroke then, they fired me for it...a letter in the mail....my leave was up Aug 1st, I was terminated the 2nd and got the news by the 4th!! The student who filed false claim and 2 employees who harassed me(one watched me on camera while on campus..a big no no which caused super uncomfortable feelings for me)were allowed to stay..I believe they even thrived, but I was let go asap...a few months prior, I had received an award for going above and beyond to ensure my students safety and well-being....so I know by that and my evaluations I was doing a stellar job. Just another example of how the people willing to step on anyone to get up the ladder end up doing just that! I am back in the work force after over 6 months out as a caregiver for seniors in their homes....its wonderful work, but no pay... certainly not paid the positions worth. But, I can't shake the feeling of wishing I could return to the Job Corps in my area to be an RA again... would history repeat itself? Or would I be taken a bit more seriously?is it worth finding out? Could I sue for wrongful termination and for being subjected to unnecessary stress which, in turn, caused severe and now life long medical issues?

Wtf Entry-level

So I've recently graduated with a master's in management, in total I've spent 5 years in school, 4 in undergrad and 1 in grad school. I held a labor relations internship for 3 months, it was more of an externship. During the intern/externship I began to garner an interest in Human Resources. I've been applying to entry-level positions and majority of the positions I've come across require 2-5 years of experience in HR, how is that entry-level? I at least need a year of experience in an HR role to acquire my SHRM/PHR certification.

This could be a great lead-in question!

Lois, I really liked this question the writer offered near the end of the article: "What does it take for an employee to succeed in this position/company?"

I feel this could be an excellent lead-in question to ask, when the HR person or hiring manager says, "So, what can we tell you about us?" As they trot out their "best stuff," you can be "building your case for why you're a great fit with their idealized description,(if you truly feel you are!) and making it a lot harder for them to close out the interview with, "We feel you're not a good fit."

Honest (Tough Love) Feedback -- Can You Handle It?

Hi there. I'm relatively new to Jobcase (I'm an HR manager, and I do all of the recruiting for the company for which I work, so I'm on here looking for potential job candidates). I know Jobcase is supposed to be about community and lifting people up (in addition to being a job resource), but I BEG you to look at your posts from an employer perspective. What do employers see on here? People whining, complaining about their former employers, sharing their drama (please save it for Facebook), lack of accountability, and blatantly poor writing skills (ATROCIOUS spelling, punctuation, and grammar). Looking at it from my perspective as an employer, why would I consider you?

As I advise people when I give them feedback, your resume, cover letter, or any job-related social media post is more important than a text or a tweet, it's your chance at a better life. Treat it with the care it deserves. Same goes for what you post on here.

I find that 25% of people appreciate the honest feedback I provide (about resumes, cover letters, job hopping, Microsoft skills, interviewing skills, etc.), and say that they will act on it, 50% ignore it, and 25% object to it (usually it's me, not them that's the problem according to their email responses). Don't be that second 25%, or you will forever be on here whining and complaining. I don't have to spend my limited time giving feedback, but I do because I want people to have the opportunity to achieve their best lives and careers if they are willing to put in the work.

That's enough rant for today. I'm stepping off my soapbox.

HR Question

My husband works for a aerospace company and has been there a year. In March I developed sepsis and almost died. My hubs went to his company and sat down with HR and his boss on two separate occasions and filled them in on what was going on. At this time he was told to take independent care days off in order for him to be with me at the hospital and to take me to medical appointments. He asked if documentation was need and was told no. He was also told this time off wouldn’t be used against him. Fast forward 3 months later and he is called into HR and told if he takes off any more days that are not vacation days he will be written up and will not be able to attend school! I don’t get how they can say one thing and another day say the opposite. It was HR who told him to take independent care and it wasn’t going to used against him. Every day he was/is off there’s a doctors note that can be turned in to HR. Has this happened to anyone? What did you do ?

My advice to people interested in working at #LittleRockJobcorps as a #Residentadvisor ...

That job corps is a good place to work you're around different cultures different personalities and everybody treats you as equal

Only time you got real stressful is when the weekend, when the kids get ready to go home or somewhere on the weekends or when a new student comes in because a lot of times are not used to structure so that takes time
