How long have you been out of the work force, and it doesn't matter how long you are out of the work force because you do have skills, did you work before and even though you a at home wife or mother, it doesn't matter, get you a piece of paper, sit on your bed or at your table and write down what you did on your last job or jobs, and what you do at home, I guarantee you, you will see all the experience that you have and then some. The only thing is when you go out there to find a job, you have to sell yourself. Before you go out that door to go to an interview or fill out an application, I know you have mirrors in your home, stand in front of one of them mirrors and say to yourself or out loud, "I may have been out of the work force for sometime," but guess what, I'm better than anybody else that is coming to get this or any other job." Own that job that you are going for, because when you own it, it becomes yours!! :))
I would sign up with some temp agencies to gain some experience and find out what type of business you might want to work in. Do you want financial, manufacturing, insurance, medical, engineering, etc. Sometimes you can stumble into a temp to perm opportunity that you won’t find online. This is how I found several jobs and I enjoyed the diversity.
Know your 'STUFF'. I have found many HR people are relatively clueless about the full aspect of what you try to get across to them. They are very complacent. Many have been in the same position for a long time. They act like robots. Two dimensional thinkers. No grey matter in the middle. This is wide spread.
Hi Jennifer, Though it may not seem like it, you are in a great place!! You have the opportunity to design your future career and you have the time to do it.
Use this time to identify who you are (as a person and a professional), what you need (for a successful career, from your future company & in your life) and where you want your career to go.
Doing this work allows you to identify your skills and your value that you will offer a company or client (if you discover that entrepreneurship is your next career step). You will also identify what you need in your career and from the company that you will work with. This includes your role (who you will perform and the results), your pay, your work environment, etc. You need to know this so that you can identify the best career opportunity for you, pursue it, perform in it, and improve your quality of life.
Next you should rebrand yourself. Update your resume to highlight your value for the career opportunity that you have discovered that you want to pursue. Update (or create) your LinkedIn profile as well. Start making connections on LinkedIn and submitting resumes or proposals for the opportunities that you are seeking.
You should also devote time to personal and professional development during this time. Complete courses relative to your desired career path, transferrable and hard skills, software, etc. Search for professional development courses or networking events on Eventbrite or check out some courses on Udemy (they have free and paid course, some offer certifications). Search for courses related to your field, there are so many out there. Take advantage and do not forget to update your resume and professional profiles. This step is critical, rather you are employed or unemployed, we have to keep learning and growing.
Another action you can take is to volunteer at a company or organization that aligns to what you want to do with your career. You will gain experience and build your network; this could also lead to you finding your next career opportunity.
If you are unemployed, then finding your next career opportunity is now your Full - Time job. If you are employed, then it is your part time job. This rewarding process takes time and effort to identify and have the career that you desire, the one where you will make money doing what you love and were purposed to do. Allocate time each day to develop as a person, as a professional, network in your industry and act on opportunity leads and/or referrals.
