Self-employed benefits?

State of TN says I can't get unemployment because I was self-employed. But I heard the rules were changed to afford unemployment payments to people that had been said self-employed and whose business dried up due to the corona thing. Anybody know about this? #coronavirus #hiringevents #healthcare #deliverydriver #ridesharedriver

I applied for unemployment as self employed the beginning of April, and still haven't recieved anything. Towards the end of April they sent email acknowledging the receipt of my application, Mid May they asked for a copy of my social, which I sent. And here it is almost a month later and I haven't heard anything else.

You are put through regular unemployment benefits first and then can apply for PUA BENEFITS which is for independent contractors, people who worked 30 days prior to the quarantine and who would not qualify for regular benefits.

Apply ASAP. Unemployment benefits are definitely available for self-employed and small business owners.

Mark, search for the PUA ( called poo-wah) application for your state. It is probably a completely different site. In Ohio I had to hunt for it. I helped my sister apply because she was originally denied for not making enough, but she qualified under PUA because her place of business was closed because of COVID. She knew immediately. She had to file for every week she was off, but then she got all of the back money within a couple of days. (Again, this is for Ohio). You may have someone at the unemployment office designated to answer questions about PUA filings.

Mark - it is a different program that self-employed fall under. While it is administerd by state unemployment offices, some have a separate process for self-employed vs traditionally unemployed. The program is known as PUA... here is great article about it with links to each states applications process to PUA. https://www.jobcase.com/articles/18b4c473-5f40-452d-b5ae-9f4cc76ca1c5
