Employer Ghosting

Employer ghosting is frustrating to say the least and not a good business practice.

I believe recruiters sometimes are inundated with applications and interviews and inevitably ghosting can happen.

I like to use post-interview follow-ups as opportunities to both thank the interviewer for their time and reiterate interest in the role, but also use the opportunity to nudge the interviewer to take action and keep yourself top of mind with them.

So let's say you have an interview Tuesday at 10am - thank the interview at the end of the interview for his/her time and close the conversation by telling them how interested you are in the role and ask for a timeline for next steps. The next morning email them a quick thank you note, but make it personal; include something specific you spoke about or connected on during the interview, remind them why you would be a good fit for the role, and reiterate the next step that they gave you, eg looking forward to our next touch base conversation on Monday the 12th or whatever they noted as the next step. Then be sure to follow up with them at the time of the next step they gave you. If you didn't hear from them on Monday the 12th as discussed, send them a note around 3pm that day letting them know you were expecting to hear from them and you are still very interested in the role.

Here are a few articles on the topic that I find helpful:

Estoy contigo Laura Turner pero una cosa es ser fiel al empleo y otra cosa es no darse a respetar cuando se humilla a un subordinado como me pasó a mi en los 90 en burger King en Ponce, P R.

4 out of 4 said they'd let me know either way -by end of week- Don't say anything! Waste of my time.. SERIOUSLY not impressed

The last two recruiters who contacted me for positions actually offered me the position. I've had a problem, however, with employers who called me in for interviews and then set a timeline for filling the position only to not keep in contact regarding the process. I actually gave a urine sample for a drug test for one position and never heard back. Typically, the drug screen is the last step before being hired. I have found that recruiters will only contact you if they intend to hire you. That's been my experience.

It's very unfortunate that employer ghosting occurs. As a long time recruiter I know full well that all reputable ATS's have one or two click notifications for all stages of the recruiting life cycle.

There are so many reasons for a delay in contacting you after an interview please be patient and know they are short handed and must keep business flowing while interviewing for employee. It’s flu season also. Many are getting sick. Keep yourself busy and keep applying, another door may open. Best of luck to you

I try to always thank the employer for the opportunity. It lets the employer know that you are appreciative and ready to work!

I've had several interviews from a recruiter as well. He had me all hyped up for a job that needed immediate help just to find out, I was ghost!! I reached out to the recruiter soon after the interview, he didn't answer my call, neither did he reply to my text. I sent 3 messages to him before he replied, "the position has been filled, they moved forward". I think the Employer had already chose the candidate for the position before my interview, but they had to interview me so the recruiter could get his commission!?? #frustrated
