What's the key to success in a Package Delivery Driver job?
Hi Evelio! I hope you are doing awesome out there! As a delivery driver, I will share with you what I found to be my keys to success. It all depends on how you come into the job. My first day, I came in wanting to beat the best driver they have back to the warehouse every day(he didn’t know it though and I never beat him, he had a tighter route than everybody). That pushed me to do my best every single day and allowed me to develop a working system. I had to be efficient, I worked hard, I never followed the pre set route and always took the path that made the most sense, and I was consistent with my efforts. When I did door to door sales, we always followed a rule, tied to the right. I applied this in delivery and kept to the right side as much as possible. Sometimes, you can’t and that’s okay, because it’s unavoidable. Always follow the most efficient route that flows with you and traffic. And once you mentally agree to the route you made, stick to it 100 percent. The more changes I made on the field, the more time I wasted out there contemplating and being indecisive. Understand the company rules and systems as well, don’t always go based off of what you think is right. Every company will have policies and procedures set in place for certain situations. If you can’t make a delivery, call a dependable and responsible person(manager or assistant manager(s). The necessary skills to be successful are efficiency, hard work, safe driving habits, awareness of your surroundings in and out of the van, effective routing, strong decision making, and developing the right attitude to perform the job effectively. Remember to take breaks and drink plenty of water. It can be physically and mentally draining and you need to take care of yourself. I truly hope you find this helpful. Develop your own system and create your own success. I know there will be more ways to overcome certain things and it gets tough out there, so if you’re just starting out and where we you are, make sure you give this job 90 days and in those 90 days, train, develop, and grow. If you don’t see any results within a 90 day working period, it’s up to you whether you want to keep the growth curve going or call it good. Tips for food delivery drivers
Work in a heavily populated area: If you live in a small town, there's not as much order volume, and not as many orders to choose from, plus people probably aren’t throwing around money or tipping big.
Be kind to the employees working the front of restaurants: Delivery drivers are seen as taking tips away from the front-of-house workers like hostesses and servers. The customer is tipping the driver instead of them, and they can get a little frustrated.
Be aware of your surroundings: Always be cautious where you are at all times. Make sure you are always following the correct directions, don't try & take short cuts!
Waiting is the hardest part: It is a waiting game, just be patient & the orders will come!
It helps to be extroverted: Make sure you are always polite, but don't let restaurants make you wait a really long time for customer's food.
