What does it take to get a remote customer service job?

We highlighted Kelly Services yesterday as one of the legitimate remote work companies that offer mostly customer service jobs. So what are the requirements for this type of work?

What skills make me a good fit for this job? To be a good fit for a job in customer service from home, you’ll want to have a good grasp of these skills and an ability to display certain traits, like:

  • The ability to take many calls with various people throughout the day
  • A cheerful, understanding demeanor
  • The ability to de-escalate/calm an upset customer
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn call center and/or ticketing software
  • A motivation to help people and solve complex problems daily.

What tools would make this job easier for me? If you’re looking to work as a customer service representative remotely, your job will be a lot easier if you have these tools handy:

  • Reliable high-speed internet
  • A quiet space in your home
  • A laptop or home computer with internet connectivity
  • A headset with an earpiece and microphone (for taking calls)
  • A comfortable chair and desk (not required, but preferable!)
