Are they really benefits if you have to pay for them anyway?

A lot of people like to think their health plans from work are a benefit, life plans, dental, blabla. And recruiters list these things as 'benefits' on help wanted ads.

But are they REALLY benefits?

I don't think so. To my mind, a benefit is something you get for free by virtue of working somewhere. PTO, for example, or in my current case a location/schedule that lets me fly my RC airplanes after work whenever the weather allows. When I look at my pay stub I do not see deductions on there for any of these things.

What I do see on my paystub is half a day's pay vanishing for insurances. Health, vision, dental, life, it's all taken out of my paycheck. And in my eyes that means it is NOT a benefit. It's no different than if I had declined all of them and shopped for my own plans outside of work!

To me, if I'm having to pay for it with a deduction on every paycheck, it's not a benefit. Especially if it's costing me 200+ each month.

I'm also considering just outright dropping them all to give myself a raise, 'cause god knows the stingy bastards I work for ain't gonna give me one anytime soon. Too busy rollin' around in their brodozered out F250s and Audi Q6s...

What made me stay at #PeoplesBank was

I was at PeoplesBank for almost 15 years after Dow Jones Co (there for 36 years). I stayed at PeoplesBank for insurance benefits for my family, I had two girls in college at the time.
