Having worked with an insurance company before I can say the top two skills listening and empathy. The customer needs to know someone is there for them, someone understands their situation, there is someone they can trust, and someone can help them get through the situation they are in.

Mattie, be careful about coming across as all about making a customer comfy and happy. Certainly you want to help people but remember this is a job not a social service. Here are some important skills for an insurance company claims rep that you can tell the interviewer that you feel you have skills at: 1) Ability to understand thoroughly what coverage a particular situation includes. You like helping people and you like putting energy into understanding the problems the customer has and you feel competent at understanding what the insurance coverage can do for them (and not for them). 2) You have skills at figuring out what exactly has happened and the ability to write up clearly the situation 3) You feel you have skills and talents at being comfortable in contentious situations and feel you can resolve them in an orderly and fair manner and can communicate clearly and can handle customers who may be 'ramped' up and you have abilities to keep them calm. In summary: you can communicate clearly & document findings thoroughly, you can understand coverage details of a policy and you are personable and tactful in discussing stressful situations with a client.

I don't think I can help you with that. I have never worked for an insurance company before.

I interviewed with New York Life a few years ago and was asked why I wanted to go into insurance sales. I replied that I wanted to help people reach their financial goals and prepare them for life’s uncertainties. The interviewer said, “Huh, I’ve never heard that before, most people just say; the commissions”.
