I agree telling them individually could be a problem for me. I might get them together and tell them the same thing I was told. There may be a lay off within the next few days. If there is, our department will most likely take a hit. If you are layed off, the company will help you, in various ways to find new employment, if that is something you would like. When I was layed off the company was very helpful.

Me I would. Some people have certain jobs because it all they can do. Or other reasons. I worked for a place. Long time ago was a hotel. Just moved to the state was trying to find my footing. Was with them 4 months, got a place. Still looking for a management position.in that state. One day I came in we all worked. Later that day when all work was done. They handed out the letter. Told us 3 to 4 weeks before our last pay. My think is. They have a cushion. Informing shows morals. Shows you care about you employees. Shows they care if they become homeless. Moral values come into place. Not policy. Police is used for cover, of not carrying.

Yes, they all need to prepare, look for diffrent work. I never found that fair. Leaving people scrambling and upset.

I would get everyone in my department together, maybe during like a cool down period; lunch or break and tell them all at once what it was that was overheard.

I do not believe anything should be kept secret if it's as important as this they have the right to know as soon as upper management was informed. Communication is key and plays a big role in successful operations and relations also gives employees enough time to plan. If they don't want anything said then that's shady what's the true intentions . My grandmother ways said if you do not want your secrets told best to not to tell anyone till u do.
