Graduate Looking for Receptionist Office Job

Hi everyone!

I'm new in this group, but I can see that all of you are eager to help out the newbies. Do you have any receptionist job opportunities in the Caledonia/Grand Rapids MI area? It's really hard to find a job that will take entry level people! Thanks! #entrylevel #hiringnews #jobsearch

How do you deal with abusive bosses?

In assistant positions, it's not uncommon to work for principals whose leadership styles can push the boundaries from "tough" to downright abusive. This can be particularly true in executive support positions. I've seen this kind of behavior in various industries, but especially in the entertainment industry. Intimidation, casual cruelty, and yelling come with the territory.

So, fellow administrative assistants, how have you dealt with workplace hostility?

For me, keeping a poker face, an even voice, and a professional posture helped diffuse inappropriate meltdowns. The calm counterpoint to a meltdown can deescalate a situation, and ultimately change the long-term dynamic. While this kind of hazing/taming ritual shouldn't exist in the first place, sometimes you have to go through the rough patches to further your career. (In other situations, I have weighed my options, and put in my two-weeks notice on the spot!)

Afraid to even try....

Hi, all. I'm 56 years old. For about 25 years I worked as an Admin. Asst. in various types of fields. I gained a lot of knowledge and skills. I have one year of community college in something that's unrelated, no other education. About 10 years ago, some life circumstances changed and I ended up working seasonally (Jan. - Apr. of every year) doing taxes for some major chains. I would like to get back into the Administrative field, but at this point my skills are so out-of-date and I feel like I don't stand a chance anywhere due to age discrimination. I had thought that my best bet would be completing some type of classes to become thoroughly reacquainted with Word, Excel, and Outlook, then applying to some temp agencies. If anyone has any suggestions or advice I would really welcome it. Thanks!

To dye or not to dye..

Hello everyone. This is my first post. I am 53 and my last day at my current company is Friday. I have an interview with a company on Monday and I have not dyed my hair for two years. It has taken that long for the old color to come out. Should I dye my hair? What do you think? I have a silver streak on the left side close to my face and sporadic grays. I was just wondering what others think. Thanks!

Advice on Certification Courses and In-Demand Skills

Good Evening and Happy New Year!

It's been a while since I posted on here. Due to being occupied with job searching and other personal matters, I am back.... To ask for advice on in-demand job skills and certification courses that are the best time and money investments for 2019 and beyond. Please provide information that is beneficial and positively contributes to this post (There are times when people use these posts to brag about their financial successes and put others down for not doing the same "soon enough". Life happens and others do their damnedest to be stable). I want to improve my marketability and increase my chances of gaining full employment with benefits along with making investing in stocks and contributing to my retirement account. I am not expecting everyone to have the "perfect answer", but sage advice is definitely welcomed.

Thank you and have a Wonderful 2019!

Administrative Assistant Job Interview Tips

  1. Be on time for your interview. GPS the location ahead of time. You may even want to do a test drive the day before.
  2. Research the company you are interviewing with. The more you learn about the company and what they do the better prepared you will be.
  3. Dress professional. No jeans, sneakers, etc. Wear a suit or a nice skirt and blouse. No jeans, sneakers or sandals. If you don't have anything to wear borrow from a friend.
  4. Bring a copy of your resume. Yes, you may have sent it to them, but sometimes they won't have it in front of them.
  5. Be prepared to take a skills assessment test. This may include a typing test. Review basic skills ahead of time.
  6. Shake the interviews hand if they extend their hand. Make eye contact and pay attention. Speak clearly and load enough for the interviewer to hear you.
  7. Keep your answers short. Practice answering questions ahead of time with a friend.
  8. Always be positive. Even if you didn't like your last job explain you are looking for a better opportunity. Don't bad mouth your previous employer or company.
  9. Be prepared with references. Yes, they will ask.
  10. Smile and be confident.
