Don't talk so FAST!

Headed to the [Cincinnati job fair] (https://www.jobcase.com/cw-job-fair) or a different one?

Keep these things in mind!

As you approach the employer’s table make sure you are friendly, confident, and most importantly prepared with something to say. Be different and stand out! Don’t fall back on chatting about the weather because 100 other people will likely be doing the same exact thing. Instead, research the companies you are going to chat with beforehand and lead with something to catch their attention.

“Hello! My name is….I am really impressed that your company…”

As you speak SMILE, make good eye contact, and offer a brief, firm [handshake] (https://www.jobcase.com/conversations/522f52e3-d800-59dd-bc7e-26eaa14be6d1).

Many times the employer will take the lead by asking you a few questions, so have your [elevator pitch ready] (https://www.jobcase.com/conversations/7af45c96-9dbb-555e-8bf0-eed09382fc67?from=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.jobcase.com%252Fcommunity). This is a 30-second synopsis of what you'd like the company to know about you, and how it pertains to them. Practice your pitch so you're comfortable and confident speaking about yourself. It does take practice!

Make sure not to go too fast when you speak. Job seekers have a tendency to speak quickly as there is a lot to say in a short period of time, but this can comes across as rushed or implies you’re nervous when in fact you are not.

Speak slowly, listen, and engage your audience.

So, what’s YOUR game plan to get hired at your next job fair?

Make sure to NAIL this question!!

The most common question asked during an interview or at a job fair is, “Why should we hire you?”

Answering these 5 simple questions and writing them down will help you pull your pitch together in NO time, so you feel prepared and confident. Let's take a look!

• What is the EXACT job description (write it down) and how do MY skills match up with it? Be as specific as possible.

• Why do I really want this job beyond having a steady paycheck and/or benefits/other perks? Make sure to focus on what you can bring to them not the other way around!

• What are three awesome things I did in my previous role (think skills and experiences) that I can offer in this one?

• What are the five strongest reasons I am a great fit for this job?

• What are some positive things I can say about the company I want to to work for, and how can I connect what they do with what I can bring to them?

Tips/tricks

-Tailor your pitch to the company, make it about them!

-Keep your pitch simple, short and memorable. It should be 30 seconds to a minute but not much longer.

-They want to know what you bring to the table so stick to your plan and don’t lose focus and ramble.

-By the end of the pitch, the employer should know who you are, what you do, and what you are looking for.

Check out these [samples pitches] (https://www.thebalancecareers.com/elevator-speech-examples-and-writing-tips-2061976) and other ideas!

So, what will you say when they ask...

Why should we hire you?

BIG job fair coming!!!

The Cincinnati job fair is COMING up on October 2nd

If you haven’t already, be sure to [register HERE] (https://www.jobcase.com/cw-job-fair) and have the chance to meet and interview with over 40 local employers, including some great companies like Amazon!

Now let’s get you ready for the fair with the following tips:

Lay out your clothing Do this the day before to ensure you won't have to scramble trying to find something the morning of the job fair. Make sure your clothing is clean, wrinkle-free, and professional (NO jeans). Check out some tips on what you can wear [here] (https://www.jobcase.com/conversations/60d77b2f-6640-5331-8816-dca310ec58bf?from=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.jobcase.com%252Fcommunity).

Grab those resumes Print and pack at least 50 copies and place them in a folder, or notebook and then tuck them away in a bag. Just make sure your resumes are easily accessible when an employer requests a copy, so you don't have to go digging for it! Don’t have a printer? No problem, check out some great advice [HERE] (https://www.jobcase.com/conversations/4d3535bd-34ee-5eb3-9d7e-fc2f066d82a6).

Eat a good breakfast It’s true what they say, breakfast IS the most important meal of the day. It will fuel your brain/body first thing and last until lunchtime! When in doubt bring a snack if you think you will be hungry like a power bar you can tuck away in your pocket or bag.

Get to bed Even if you’re a night owl, put on those pj’s and climb into bed early enough the night before so you get a full 8 hours. You will look rested tomorrow and feel much calmer and focused the next day!

Arrive at the fair early Plan how you will get there (car, bus, train, a ride) and how long it will take with [Google maps] (https://www.google.com/maps). Arrive a little bit early to calm your nerves and take a lap around the room before you begin to speak with employers and make a plan!

Practice your pitch Whether it’s in the shower or on the ride over, rehearse it a few times out loud so you build up that confidence! What will you say in 20-30 seconds to grab that employer’s attention? Need some help? Check out [THIS post] (https://www.jobcase.com/conversations/d11f70ef-0d6e-5730-8610-36528b33a832).

Know the company’s mission/culture If you haven’t researched it yet take some time to see what the company is all about and jot down some notes! Visit their website, read reviews, and discover what makes them great. Remember, your pitch should be tailored to what YOU bring to that company based on what they do. Plus, they will be impressed with your knowledge so do that research!

Break the ice Practice a few of these [conversation starters] (https://www.jobcase.com/conversations/6d46f61d-c53b-5ec5-9d7c-69cc61713f6a) to get things rolling when you approach an employer. No one likes those awkward silences.

Wishing you the best of luck in finding a new job at the fair : )

Looking for a change.

I am a restaurant manager of over 37 years of experience, wishing to translate my skills into another industry.

Throughout my career in restaurants, I have shown the ability to adapt, grow, and motivate myself and others to provide results required to be successful with existing and new businesses. I have recruited, trained, and placed individuals from a subordinate, as well as superior positions. I have successfully operated in a management capacity for numerous companies. I have participated in many restaurant startups and have been a part of management teams that hold company records for daily, weekly, and monthly sales, as well as EBITDA for a single financial period. I am task oriented, and a self-starter. I have the ability to communicate well with others. I can put others at ease, and make them eager to find a mutual connection in order to achieve common goals. I have the communication skills that promote team building, and responsibility in those under my supervision. Very early in my career, I participated as a company trainer responsible for the training of staff, and the successful grand openings of multiple new restaurants throughout the Midwest, and other areas. Restaurants under my supervision have been recognized for excellence in cleanliness, hospitality, and operations. I initiated a hospitality program that is still being used in many locations of a major fast food company today! I have been involved in many local organizations including the Lake Placid, NY Kiwanis Club, Clintonville Chamber of Commerce in Columbus, Ohio, and Board Member of the Whetstone Recreation Center in Clintonville.

It is my sincere wish to join a company that recognizes my potential, and wishes to use my experience and abilities to help move ahead in the future. I believe that my skills and experience, along with some additional training and advice, can promote mutual growth and success for a company willing to retain my services.
