Id always prefer an event, especially if its hosted by experts. Because I can attend the event THEN do more research afterwards
Do not think your age when you are applying or during the interview. Act always as though you are 35. You will land a job very soon.

The problem with doing ones own research from home is that their are many so called work from home jobs that are more amway and telemarketing. I can't believe that anyone wants to truly work at options like that.
