@Maggie Torres, in my years as a professional I was always in awe of managers and supervisors that just seemed to have a way of interacting with employees. They seem to conduct their supervisory responsibilities with a sense of ease and confidence. I was not always the awesome and confident individual I am today. Over the years I have observed the methods that those in leadership roles use and put into practice those I saw as highly effective and made a point to avoid the methods that were clearly ineffective.

My years in management and in my role as a leader taught me a great deal about authenticity and empathy as well as learning how to hold individuals accountable without using ongoing punitive measures. When employees see you as genuine and relatable they tend to hear feedback more effectively and can learn to use it as a tool for improvement rather than becoming defensive about their shortcomings. I would always try to use my coaching sessions with them as a way of opening them to becoming more confident about their skills and abilities and showing them how to become empowered in their roles. I had some phenomenal role models myself and I have to attribute my successes to their examples and to my willingness to adapt my own methods and perspectives for the improvement of both my own professional development as well as those I was in charge of.

For those who struggle with soft skills I always recommend that they observe leaders that they respect and admire and try to put into practice the behaviors and methods that they can observe as effective tools.
