Feeling frustrated-still looking

I am getting so frustrated. I have been looking for a job for a year. I keep hearing, you are over qualified, or we have decided to go in a different direction. I worked for the state of Texas for 20 years, and even attempted to go back, but found them to hire a person with less than a year experience for the position. It is dishearten. You give your all and it is not enough. I have an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice and one in Business. I have a masters in Business Administration (MBA) and started a DBA in Human Resources, and still being told it is not enough. You tell your kids, to go to school and you will get ahead. But is that really true???

Bridget, just keep trying. Don't lose your patience while looking for a job. These days, you really have to network and try to get to know somebody to just get a callback on a job application. You might have to look for a job in a different career field in the mean time to just get by. I am facing this same situation myself even though I have a Bachelor's Degree in mathematics. Oh well. Take care.

Bridget, I understand your frustrations. Don't give up on your job search. Just keep trying and go to church. You might have to go to a work force for help. Some libraries nowadays offer resources and support for job searching.

I hope this helps.

Why not start your own business, you have a masters in business, or direct others how to start or run their existing business better. The other alternative is to get a trade education as more jobs are available quickly studies have shown.

Havent Worked Long Time Disability at Want Very Very Part Time

Bridget- And I thought I was well educated, Wow! The answer of telling your kids is yes, go to school. Always, go to school, no matter what. Like you, I have numerous degrees and the only one I have used is the one where I went back to school in my mid 40's and got a MBA. My speciality was HRM so I was a recruiter for awhile then the Human Resource Manager for the same origanization. I even have a law degree, passed the bar in 3 states but was a stay-home mom at the time and thought that was more important. To this day, I have never practiced law. At the time of my divorce, I had to find a job to comply with the mandatory half-time child requirement and sort of fell into the banking business. There were a lot of applicants, I hadn't worked in 15 years and when I got the job, I was told it was because of my education. Long story short (too late) I loved every position I held and moved up the proverbial 'corporate ladder' quickly. I loved going in to work and the day went quickly. In all my college years, thinking and stressing about majors, minors, law school banking never came to mind. So, I guess the moral of this lengthy drivel is: Don't limit yourself by your background or education, but an education can only be a plus.

They are not telling you the truth, also, you cannot go back. They don't want you to come back, they want to move on with new people. It's hard to say what they want, but I know these two things are true because I had an experience of going back to a job I had that ended, and they had no intention of hiring me back. With all your education and work experience try an entry-level job in your field of work. You might have to take a cut, but you will have a job, and you won't listen to BS.

Gis Administrator at County Of Lake

Well Bridget, welcome to the club! It started in the 80's when Ronald Reagan branded government workers less than their private sector counterpart following the PATCO firing. I once had a recruiter state that he couldn't do anything for me because I have a military past (veteran commissioned officer). This economy does not support soft skilled job seekers, technology and service is the driving force (two extremes, high paid and low paid with the middle left out).

You are not going to like this suggestion but, I will offer it anyway. You will probably have to remove some of you education to get some traction in this current market. The one you remove will depend on the jobs you are seeking. I hated to do that but, it was the only way i got passed the "over qualified" excuse thrown at me in those days. Unfortunately, that was when I finally started getting interviews leading to getting hired. I don't know your market but, if it is flooded with a college educated population, you may have to search a less crowded geographic area.

If you studied in advanced computer technology then you have a chance of finding a position. Thats the future. Get a grant and go back to school while you still have a chance..

I agree as a graduate with a BA I'm not sure if I will force my future children to college. These days it's really not worth it if your 3ducation is fully paid for and u have a strong networking scene. It's hard but keep on looking. Texas economy is pretty strong maybe start in entry level and work yourself up. Trust me it ain't easy I have a degree in criminal justice making 20 an hour as a probation officer ( which Is my passion) now that im working I'm the banking industry I make less more so yea i am having to humble alot. Ot ain't easy but aye I'm working and I'm learning alot about the financial industry. Which has been a blessing
