What are your techniques for a 1:1 with your manager?

I often focus on: 1.) Project milestones 2.) Blockers 3.) What can (s)he do to support me to make more effective 4.) Performance 5.) Life in general Any other thoughts?

Love the post, but the singular "they" is more inclusive than "(s)he", easier to type out, and OED approved! https://public.oed.com/blog/a-brief-history-of-singular-they/

Setting up clear career goals (short term and long term) and reviewing with your manager to make sure you are on track during 1:1 are also valuable items to do.

Depends on how often you have 1:1 with your manager and direct reports. I often focus on #1-3 on your list on a regular basis (e.g. weekly or bi-weekly) and purposely schedule a longer meeting once a quarter to focus on #4 and #5.

I agree with Jeff Chow - it's important to consider the "purpose" of the meeting and try to stay with one. Some general themes are:

  1. Tactical - here are the updates
  2. Feedback - how am I doing? What can I do better?
  3. Life in general - what's good in your life? Here is what is new with me.

Love the list! 4 and 5 are often times so hard to get to. I'd recommend setting up a specific catch up around that if you find yourself always running out of time before getting to it!
