My advice to people interested in working at #ShastaCountySocialServices as a #SocialWorker ...
I’d tell them it is a lot of work with a lot of frustrations. But if you love to work with people and are a problem solver, it’s very rewarding.

The biggest mistake I made as a #SocialWorker at #ShastaCountySocialServices ...
I went a client’s previous address. I was unable to get the correct address or phone number from the office. The client thought I was a no show with no phone call. I wasn’t able to reach her until the next morning. She was rightfully upset.

I worked for Shasta County Social Services for over 20 years. It is hard to pick a particular day. I am very client oriented and want to don’t best to see their needs are met, but I do understand regulations and limitations. I found it most frustrating when client needs and regulations conflicted. High caseloads were also frustrating, because I wasn’t able give the necessary time to each case to find the best outcome.

Drama at #ShastaCountySocialServices
When people get angry, I sit quietly and listen to what they have to say or I just let them vent. Once they are finished, I speak quietly so they have to really listen to hear what I have to say. I let them know what I can do to meet their concerns and what I can’t do, based on department policy or regulations. We have a conversation. I do not lecture them and I treat them with respect. When clients yell at me, I do not take it personally. They are frustrated with the system I represent. I understand that. We just do what we can to move forward.

I learned an important lesson at #ShastaCountySocialServices when...
I learned I loved working with my clients and helping them come up with solutions to make their lives better. They were senior and disabled clients.
