I have a bachelor's degree in sociology. I'd love to further my education! Anyone have any ideas for degrees or certificates I could get so that I can become a counselor/therapist for women? #advice #certificates #college #classes
My main focus works be with women suffering from domestic abuse and other traumas. I've been through the same thing and I will be able to relate to women who need someone affordable to talk to and with through the trauma. I'm a survivor and I have my counselors and therapists who helped me get to the place I am today. I'm happy and not walking on egg shells anymore.

You may need to seek a Masters level in counseling at a local accredited university.

Certificate programs can be found in five of the main counseling categories recognized from state to state: mental health counseling, marriage, and family therapy, school counseling, substance abuse counseling, and rehabilitation counseling. Certificate in Counseling

Psychology, lots of different kinds of psychology.

Take some psychology courses and that will help you do the other side of sociology because sociology is the study of living things in the world but psychology teaches you how to fix them verbally or with medication like a poor person you can help get into society but sometimes other factors get in your way like depression or alcohol abuse and it makes it harder to transition them without intervention or medication like in case of depression. Or like my sociology class I took on gangs in California you have to try to figure out why they were making that culture a norm but to solve it you can only do so much in trying to get them back to a functioning society before you have to figure out why that happens and usually it has to do with psychology. hope that helps

An MSW would qualify you for that.

Hi Amanda, First let me congratulate you on getting yourself out of that situation. It is definitely something to be proud of. Not all women have that strength to leave or they are too afraid to leave. In order to work with patients/clients in that type of field you will absolutely need a Masters Degree either in Psychology or Social Services. There are lots of accredited schools either online or on campus. Be prepared to do at least one semester of an unpaid internship so you get some actual experience. Good luck.

The state of Michigan is hiring anyone with a degree to become a teacher. Want that?

I have always been an advocate for higher education. Thus far everything here is good advice in my opinion. A Master in Social Work is another option, plus there is nothing better than to have a counselor that has risen from the ashes and can share those experiences with their patients' vs. one that has only book knowledge.

Look into Purdue Global. It's fully online. I'm getting my Master's with them now. Good luck!
I would deffenently take family and consumer sciance. I loved that class in junior high. Im sure they have it in collage. That class is basickly showing you how to better prepare yourself online and offline. It even helps with cooking sometimes as well.
