I’ve been submitting resumes on multiple sites and some of the applications sent an email back to me to take an assessment. I SUCK at test taking. Something about reading about a situation to decipher it when I’d rather take the situation into the real world and solve it hands on, stumps me. This is why I quit Finite math in high school. So I took the assessment after putting it off for over a week with the threat of not even being considered without taking the assessment in my inbox every other day. I got the next to lowest score. I honestly don’t know where to start trying to “study” to attempt to get a higher score because I don’t know what I got wrong. Now, in having had all of the applications that sent me the assessment rejected, I wonder if I should have reached out with a friendly excuse or some type of verbiage that would explain that while they might consider the assessment to be a great judge of talent, it really isn’t as far as myself and what I bring to the table. I am actually a great test taker, so it doesn’t bother me, but I considered what I would do if I were in your situation and I came up with 2 answers:
Have a friend who is great at test taking do the exam for you.
Study how to be better at taking tests. Test taking is a very learnable skill.
The reason why test taking is a skill is because test makers are bad at designing tests. Half the time they are trying to trick you with semantics rather than test your knowledge of a subject. I am actually better at semantics than they are, so that’s not a problem for me. If you get really good at splitting hairs verbally then you won’t have problems with that either.
The next test taking skill is interpreting the intent of the test maker. Because I am better at semantics than the test maker, I often have to figure out what they intended to ask rather than what they actually asked. Rather than figuring out what the answer actually is, I can often figure out what answer the test maker was likely looking for.
Next, I would read every question at least twice to make sure you didn’t miss a “not” or something that completely reverses the meaning of the question. Questions are often missed simply because they weren’t read carefully enough.
Then, there is process of elimination for multiple choice. That one is pretty obvious, but people still forget to do it. Once you have cut down the number of possible choices, it helps to look at the other test questions on the test because sometimes either the answer or a clue to the answer is contained within the other questions.
Finally, since it is obvious that you are talking about indeed assessments, one thing you could do is create a bunch of sock accounts for indeed and use those throw away accounts to practice the assessments before you take the assessments on your main, legit account that you want employers to see. Practice tests are a great tool.

While such skill assessments are never meant to be easy they pretty much follow the same pattern - copy as many as you can - provide a response and then have someone review it with you. After the review it will provide you with some insight on how and where you could do better. Then you’ll be better prepared when the next one comes along. Saying you’d do better with hands on is not a valid argument as they’d either have to hire you and hope for the best or do a more in depth psychological interview which most HR people aren’t qualified to give and they don’t have the time. Bailing on such tests is not the answer.
I do the very best that I can do on assessment then that is how it is. We are human beings, not robots with a mind of a computer. With saying that, do the very best you can do when asked to do an assessment. I have gone through assessments and even though I feel the numbers show I do well the employer may find another reason to deny me for an interview. In the end I continue to send out my resume till reaching burn out then stop then will start it all over again
My problem is I can suck at anything even whatci do best or do very well at what I do worst depending on situation ,circumstances .I'm not a real good spectator sport type worker ,task or test taker most of the time but never know till I'm there doing it ,getting rushed,getting attitudes ,etc.real hazardous ,stressfull,harmful,dangerous physically and mentally challenging things I've always got thru very well but didn't know for sure it was gonna go that way the nite before? I sure miss but great full for the years I could see a crew working or walk in and ask if in need of another man ,if yes ,ok let's give it a go for a week or two ,if we both agree it looks doable we kept doing ,if not we didn't!!??!!
I don’t let it bother me because there have been studies indicating these assessments are not accurate. They look for perfection and as we know that doesn’t exist. It’s a shame they do this but, ultimately it’s a loss to their organization.
Testing is a skill.
Same happened to me. A few of the tests i didn’t”highly proficient” others were just barely passing but when u apply for the job and they need a certain one of the test results it offers to post your current results or retake the test. I chose not to retake the ones I barely passed and eventually I got offered a job in the field I was searching with adequate pay. You just have to keep trying! Took me 2 months without a job to find one that finally offered me a position. Keep it up! Don’t get discouraged!!!! Your time will come i promise!!!
