New Collar Jobs

Did you know there's a shortage of Tech Workers in the US? Well I had no idea this was an issue and honestly never gave a tech career much thought because I don't have a work background in tech. I've always heard tech workers earn big bucks but the thought of going back to school at this point in time in my career just isn't practical move; besides I've always been a little intimidated of technology. Well, seems like now you don't need a four year college degree to get a high paying tech job. Big companies are turing to coding boot camps, community colleges, and career education programs for candidates to fill these jobs due to the shortage of workers. Anyone here ever have any success transitioning into a tech job without a related degree or formal college tech training? https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/07/why-ibm-wants-to-hire-employees-who-dont-have-a-4-year-college-degree.html

Local Jobs for Our Vets

Veteran's Day is coming up and it always disappoints me to hear how much trouble vets often have with finding work once they get home. My sister and brother in law are both vets and have consistently had issues finding stable work. However, recently my sister found this website Recruitmilitary.com. It really was an important resource for helping her find something. They have a job search, job fairs, and career resources. She works as a dispatcher for a security alarm company now and is happy with her job. If any other vets are looking, make sure to check out that website. Thanks for your service.

Advice From Panasonic

This is an interesting interview article I found on MoneyWatch.com had with Tina Slattery, the director of talent acquisition at Panasonic North America who plans to hire about 3000 new employees within the next year. These are the four main points she wants to emphasize:

Don’t bash your old boss! Focus interview on your experiences, skills and competencies.

Ask questions, take every opportunity to find out firsthand something you didn’t know about the company.

Tailor your resume, align your resume to the role you are interested in.

Take control of your career, be Proactive and stay Motivated!

What I learned from my job fair experience

Job fairs are awesome, but they definitely overwhelm me. These are some things I did this time that helped me out.

I looked at ALL the company's and the jobs they had to first to see if I was even interested. Why waste my time if there is nothing that even appeals to me?

I handed out my resume...a lot. I brought like 30 copies and made sure to GIVE as many as I could out! Last time I was so nervous and that I didn’t even hand out 5. This time I pushed myself to make sure I did it before the recruiters even had to ask me for one.

I made a plan on what I was going to talk about from the second when I first approached someone and also how I would talk about myself. I have flat out froze before and ended up panicking, but NOT this time. Being organized makes me feel in control and confident.

I answered ?’s but this time I made sure to ask them as well. I think this shows that you are interested. In the past I didn't do this as much as I should. I learned.

I sent a thank you the next day and NOT a few days later.

Hope my past mistakes and what I learned helps you out for your next job fair.

Job Search Log

Anyone need help keeping track of their applications? I've been applying literally everywhere lately to the point that I lost track of all the applications I've been sending out.

I received a call back from a company I applied to back in the summer (why does it take so long to get back, uggh!) and had completely forgot about. It wasn't until a few moments into the phone screen interview that I finally figured out what job she was talking about, (not good).

Well I found this job search log document on Microsoft's webpage I think would work well for anyone who's been on the job search for a long time and needs help keeping track of their applications. I'll add the link below in case anyone is interested. Happy Hunting!

Volunteering can help land YOU a job!

Did you know that volunteering allows you to network and potentially gets your foot in the door with a future employer? It's true!

Consider volunteering for a nonprofit organization or doing pro-bono work in a job that utilizes your skills! It will help build your resume with current experience, and also fill in the gaps of time while you are out of work.

One study revealed that 42% of hiring managers say they viewed volunteer experiences as equivalent to formal work experience.

Plus you never know, you might just meet someone while volunteering who will lead you to a job opening elsewhere. Here are some volunteer opportunities in the [Cincinnati area] (http://www.uwgc.org/volunteer/ways-to-volunteer).

To search for additional volunteer position near you use the 4 easy steps below:

1.Click on “Jobs & Companies” at the top of the page 2.Enter the word volunteer into the search field that says Job title and then enter your location 3.Click on the blue hour glass symbol to search 4.Once the list is up, click on “View Job" of any you are interested in and then apply.

Happy volunteering! : )
